New details are starting to emerge about the 2013 Volkswagen Golf.

Autocar is reporting the model will have a variety of engines including a turbocharged 1.4-liter petrol with 138 hp (103 kW / 140 PS) as well as a 2.0-liter diesel with 181 hp (135 kW / 184 PS) and 280 lb-ft (379 Nm) of torque. The latter engine will reportedly be equipped with twin turbos on the GTD for an increased output of 220 hp (164 kW / 223 PS)

Contrary to previous reports, the magazine says the GTI will have a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 260 hp (194 kW / 264 PS). If this pans out, it will be a huge improvement over the current model which only has 207 hp (155 kW / 210 PS). Regardless, the GTI is slated to feature a new "VAQ" electronically-controlled front differential which has enabled a prototype to lap the Nürburgring eight seconds faster than prototypes without it.

There's also word of a 243 hp (181 kW / 246 PS) plug-in hybrid which could return more than 50 mpg UK (5.6 L/100km / 41.6 mpg US).

Interestingly, one of the variants will reportedly use aluminum in the floor, trunk and windshield base. It remains unclear what model will get the lightweight treatment, but it could be an EV or the GTI.

Options will reportedly include active cruise control, a semi-autonomous parking system and an infotainment system with an 8-inch display - items typically found in premium vehicles. We can also expect an all-wheel drive system and upgraded adaptive dampers.

It'll definitely be awesome if the next Golf R if there ever be one to follow suit in time to have more than 300hp's...my MK5 R32 is still a great drive nonetheless as its the last of the NA's and sounds great too =)

When will the MK7 make it to the USA? I could hold out for a good diesel Golf MK7 until next year if I new it was coming!

2013 probably means 2014 for US. While the hybrid might make it, I doubt the GTD will. Historically, the US gets a simplified and de-contented Golf line up.

So if there is coming a hybrid to compensate the emissions, why not give the golf R it's v6 back. Not a 3.2 maybe, but let's say a 2.4, perhaps with turbo's?

I think it would be better for the next Golf R to use the 2.5 inline 5 Turbo engine from the RS3.

With all the talk of Golf R's, this may seem rather academic........I currently have the 1.6 Bluemotion Derv drinker..........incredible little car which is used to consume miles (km's to our European readers). I get free road fund license, stupid mpg and its comfortable to boot........just hope they continue with the same engine or with improvements for the forthcoming model. Looks great!

I was wondering whether or not the mysterious light weight version described in the article would not be the BlueMotion version... I like my Polo BlueMotion as well.. but when I get into the 2.0 TFSI S-Tronic (A3) I also like the performance... Economy and performance have their respective places... But the performance diesel looks very attractive from where I'm standing.
