VW Transporter campervan with electrically extendable rear pod launches [video]

Who needs a campervan (aka motorhome) when you can have a smaller van with an electrically extendable rear pod providing the same amount of living space?

That's precisely the line of thinking for South Wales firm Overland Motorhomes Ltd who have nearly doubled the size of a Volkswagen T5 Transporter with an electrically extending pod that self-levels on two legs. The T5 DoubleBack combines the practicality of driving a Transporter with the room of a common motorhome.

"The DoubleBack has been inspired by a desire to see a truly spacious, comfortable camper with all the practical advantages of a smaller vehicle," says Craig McCormack, Founder in a released statement.

Identified as an ideal vehicle for leisure or sports, the DoubleBack can accommodate families and couples, carrying 2 or 3 passengers in either 'captains chairs' or benchseat configurations.

Inside, the vehicle is fitted with an elevating roof with fold out bed, a kitchenette and all the usual refinements.

The base vehicle is the Volkswagen Transporter long wheelbase with 2.0-liter TDI 140PS ( 103 kW / 138 bhp ).

The DoubleBack will be available for public viewing at VW Sinclair dealership in Cardiff on Saturday March 24, 2012.

The DoubleBack is priced at £54,995 on the road.

Overall, a nice concept but I'm left with a couple of questions: 1) how much does the package increase the weight of the van? 2) what does the main cabin look like when it's extended out back? So far as I can tell, you see the pictures of the cabin only when the doubleback is not extended. I could not find any further details at the http://www.doubleback.co.uk website. Still, I could see it working for some people.
