Infiniti considering GT-R-based sports car

 Infiniti considering GT-R-based sports car
Infiniti Essence Concept

It has long been rumored that the platform for the Nissan GT-R will eventually be shared out to their Infiniti sister brand. After waiting quite a few years, you could be wondering if it was ever going to happen, but now it appears the initial stages of development have begun if a report by Car Magazine proves to be correct.

According to Francois Bancon, head of advanced planning for Infiniti in Tokyo, the Infiniti brand currently has three or four proposals on the table for a new top of the range model. He also confirmed one of these is a GT-R based sports car.

The GT-R is a no holds barred sports car and despite a fairly modest price, Nissan has achieved super car performance. However, if an Infiniti version does get approved for production, we will be looking at softer version of the GT-R. Furthermore, Infiniti would wait until at least 2015 to launch the model following the release of the planned "smaller Infiniti".

why would Nissan make TWO GT-R's? if an infiniti version is based on the platform of the GT-R it would most likely utilize most of the GT-R internals, so what's the point? no reason to have 2 super cars for the same company basically. The GT-R is fine.

As for mass produced car manufacturers (not strictly super car manufacturers) you got: Toyota/Lexus LF-A, Honda/Acura NSX, Nissan GT-R (Infiniti basically reproducing a GT-R), the German car manufacturers don't exactly have other divisions unless you want to call Volkswagen a division of Audi but anyway, they produce that 1 super car in their names as well: Audi R8, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, BMW doesn't currently have a super car, then head over here we have: Chevrolet Corvette, Ford GT (when it was produced in 2005), Dodge Viper....etc. point is, what is the need for 2 Nissan GT-R's when the Infiniti variant is going to be based on the GT-R anyway?

 M! M!
@VTEC, "the German car manufacturers don't exactly have other divisions unless you want to call Volkswagen a division of Audi but anyway, they produce that 1 super car in their names as well: Audi R8.." eh, the R8 is a derivative of the Lamborghini Gallardo. Lamborghini is under the Audi brand. did you just stick your foot in your mouth?...

Good. Lexus has the LFA. Acura (will) have the NSX. Let Infiniti have its own halo car.

Seems like this is a no-brainer. The GT-R is an excellent car whose styling doesn't do it's part. A re-skinned version for Infiniti would make a great halo car.

Good idea, but they should discontinue the gtr while the Infiniti (gtr) is out. Don't let one stifle the other. Honda got it right by not labeling the NSX a Honda. And pleeeeeeeeeeez dont make it look like anything close to the cars in your Nissan line up. (i.e. every Toyota/Lexus)

I'm curious to see how the car will turn out. A lot of people don't like how GTR looks, the Infinity version is sure to look more elegant, but probably also perform less.
