A report by Autocar magazine has unearthed some early speculative specifications for the new Mercedes A-Class AMG which is currently under development.

The AMG division has drawn on the technical expertise of the High Performance Engine (HPE) division that is based in Brixworth, Northamptonshire. They are looking to bring out the best from AMG's turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine and if details are accurate, we could see it generate more than 335 bhp (250 kW / 340 PS).

The target figure has been placed by Ola Kallenius, head of AMG and former boss at HPE. He is looking for the new A25 AMG to exceed the power and performance of the Audi RS3 Sportback and BMW's forthcoming M135i hatch.

Following its debut in the A25 AMG, the new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine will also find its way to the larger CLC25 AMG and CLC25 Shooting Break AMG that are both scheduled to be released next year according to the source.

Well lets look at this thing's potential competitors. The BMW 1M comes in manual, the RS3 comes in manual, the ATS-V will come in manual. Do you see where I'm going here? They must offer a manual given that their competition does in that segment.

@ Dolomight 74-86- To respond to your response above, believe me, no one wants a manual more than me, and I see your logic. However, although MB tends to somewhat mimic competitors along engine sizes and horsepower, they tend to be very consistent with their transmissions. MB has absolutely no manual cars in its repetoire, and has been following this policy for at least a decade. Even the SLR has no manual. I find it hard to believe they would change their policy for a non-sports car, even if it is an AMG model. Cadillac just got rid of their manual on the CTS, except for the V model. The 2015 R8 will not have a manual either. Further still: M5=manual, E63=no manual / M3=manual, C63=no manual / Z4=manual, SLK=no manual. I see where you were trying to go, and my point wasn't that I don't want one..it was that I can't see them doing a one-off for this car when the luxury performance industry itself is moving toward 3rd-pedal apprehension. However please keep in mind I am only talking US-spec. I've driven the previous A-class in europe as a diesel rental and it had a manual.

Point taken. So just to recap want manual = Move to Europe. Seems logical to me.

Asking about manual MBs when none have been made in your country for decades is not very logical. Get something else. Love, Narco.

AMGs are always superior in term of performance so this A is going to be a rocket. Watch out R32 & upcoming RS3.

if ud know ur facts, the R32 is "obsolete" since.....dinosaurus roamed the earth. the new, and much better hot hatch from vw is the r-gti. and it is a great hatch. an A claas was never a problem for VAGs hatches. they didnt even posed a problem for Fords` focus or Opels` astra gtc. so ud better keep ur fingers and toes crossed

Production of the R32 stopped in 2008 but was available for sale until mid 2009. I'd hardly call 3 years "since dinosaurs roamed the earth". the replacement isn't "R-GTI", its just R. As in, 'the new Golf R'. The Golf R is a better car than the R32 but it lost a hell of alot by dropping the 3.2 V6. The new car has nothing like the same sensation when driven. What I'd like to see in a Golf is the 2.5 RS3 engine or even the 3.0 supercharged V6 from the S4 but I digress...
