Arab drifting goes mainstream with M.I.A's 'Bad Girls' music video

In a new twist on the controversial style of Arab drifting called hagwalah, the illegal and often fatal practice serves as the backdrop of a fairly large scale music video production.

The video is for the hip-hop single "Bad Girls" by British artist M.I.A. aka Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam. In the video, there's no assault rifles or police raids, but in true front-wheel drive hagwalah style we see all of the usual tricks - high speed drifts, flip-flop pavement skating and some two-wheel balancing action. At one point there's even some syncronized 180 J-turns - cool.

The song/video clearly wants to capitalize off the controversial nature of the illicit activity, but in the end, we can't help but come away feeling like we watched another cliche faux gangster hip-hop video with little artistic merit.

However, M.I.A does sit on top of a vehicle balancing on two wheels while she files her nails. That's kinda cool...

Because you see in videos what is "rare"... I guess maybach were like F150 over there :) (and actually, both Maybach and Alfa156 are no longer for sale... so)

Hamanoo , ever heard of a place called Dubai ? you would find that it's a place which is diametrically opposite to your statement . its fabulous skyline makes Manhattan appear like a squalid ghetto by contrast .

it amazes me at how the drivers maintain the cars' axial balance during its run with passengers precariously perched at the top . not even a Schumacher can perform this feat .

seriously the director of the video don't give an effort to make the english dudes on the video to look like arabs they. I mean sport shoes with "Kandoora" white dress? lol & they all dont wear the "Agaal" properly.

Do you seriously think that this video is made for Arab viewers or UK/USA teens will notice/care? If it looks cool and sounds good they will buy it - it's just business. ;)

Love M.I.A.! Also happy to see a w210 in the video. Sounds like whoever wrote this article at jalopnik is a hip hop hater. Whatever I thought the vid was pretty awesome.

For more extreme Mia should invite Azerbaijan driving hooligans called "avtosh". They do much more dangerous tricks driving ancient Ladas

The video was clearly shot in North Africa but the setting seems to be the Gulf. Notice the all-wrong attire on the extras. Mid 90's Alfa? Not in the Gulf. Old 3-Series don't look this good in the Gulf and aren't driven by locals. Why didn't they just shoot in Dubai?

how is there no artistic merit????? this is one of the best videos of recent years and not only does it reference everything from underground arab stunt driving to tamil superstar Prabu Deva's infamous perspex bus dance routine, it is also saying a powerful message about Saudi's sexist driving laws and also holding up a mirror to our cultural perspectives and prejudices. She's a genius and so is Romain Gavras the director, it's obviously gone way over your head...
