 Volkswagen XL1 coming in 2013 - report
Volkswagen Formula XL1 concept - 1.25.2011

Will keep its plug-in hybrid powertrain

We've already heard rumors that Volkswagen was considering a production version of the XL1 concept for 2013, but new details are starting to emerge about the model.

According to Autoweek.nl, an engineer confirmed the production vehicle will keep the concept's advanced plug-in hybrid system which combined a 47 hp (35 kW / 48 PS) 800cc two-cylinder diesel engine with a 27 hp (20 kW / 27 PS) electric motor. This setup enabled the 795 kg (1,753 lb) concept to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 11.9 seconds, hit a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph) and travel up to 35 km (21.7 miles) on electricity alone.

While these figures don't sound terribly impressive, by themselves, the concept had an average fuel consumption of 0.9 l/100 km (261.3 mpg US) and CO2 emissions of 24 g/km.

In related news, the engineer reportedly confirmed the two-cylinder diesel engine will be offered in the Up!.

Looking at the amount of carbon fiber, ridiculous body work, undoubtedly absurd price tag and dismal level of practicality I would say this is a super car. A super car meant to be fuel efficient, not fast.

lets be realistic here, plug-in is so impractical at the moment due to poor battery tech. don't waste our time releasing some POS onto the market, invest more into batteries and maybe in 5-7 yrs we'll see something affordable and worth buying.
