VW considering F1 foray - report
Volkswagen logo

Volkswagen is contemplating a formula one foray, according to German reports.

The carmaker giant's motor sport representative Wolfgang Durheimer told leading business magazine Wirtschaftswoche he has devised a preliminary plan for the future that includes F1.

"Later this year I will put forward proposals to the executive group for (involvement in) not only the racing series that we do already," he said.

"It is true -- in America, Asia and the Middle East, we are not sufficiently represented in motor sport," added Durheimer.

The magazine cited sources in saying the first step for VW, already linked commercially with the Red Bull rookie team Toro Rosso, would be to become an engine supplier.

Lambo doesn't need F1, but the VW brand could use an image boost.

But F1 needs Lamborghini, not VW, nobody will guy more boring VW street cars just because they are in F1, like people didn't buy more Renaults because they are in F1. With Lamborghini on the other side, they could claim that they are using F1 to develop technology for the road model, with would make more sense.

WTF? Not represented enough in motorsport where? How will F1 help that. If we are talking Globally televised event, I think we may find ourselves surprised by their lack of motorsport involvement... GT racing- The R8 and a galaxy of 911's, LeMans- dont even go there, Dakar- only stopped coz it was getting pointless, DTM- they there, WRC- they were Skoda some time ago, will be VW now, Single seaters- they got their own series of those in a few places, WTC- there was the whole SEAT thing, the polo CUp, entire drag racing cults dedicated to them in some parts of the world, they even Raced Man and Scania Trucks for heaven sake. And those are the ones I can think of, without doing any research. I am always happy to see more competition in any series, just calling BS on their "we not involved in much" story.

still don see it. I mean, I agree with it all and im excited about them entering F1. That still dont mean that they are not involved in much.

You're talking about VW Group and all of its brands, whereas Durheimer is talking about the VW brand alone. For a company as big as VW they can surely do better than WRC S2000, F3 and Scirocco Cup.
