Porsche 911 Turbo to get new tri-turbo system

According to a new report, BMW isn't the only one messing around with tri-turbo systems. The Porsche 911 Turbo currently employs a 3.8-liter, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with a twin-turbo, but according to a report by Autocar they are set to upgrade it to a tri-turbo induction system.

Details of the complex system was revealed in patent applications by the sports car maker. It uses three separate turbochargers, two of which work similar to the twin-turbo units in current models whilst the third is mounted close to the engine to boost response at lower speeds.

It will allow the Porsche 911 Turbo to boost its raw power output to 525bhp ( 391 kW / 532 PS ) and we could then expect the higher performing Turbo S to pump out more than 550bhp ( 410 kW / 557 PS ). Following its successful introduction, the same system is expected to be spread to the 911 GT2 and 911 GT2 RS.

Porsche are reportedly entering the final stages of development for the system which has been kept well hidden inside the 911 Turbo prototypes you see pictures in this article.

Added weight for the same kind of power the previous system could produce? Hmmm...

532 PS means around 30 PS more power, right? By the way, it would be no problem to bring the current layout to the same power. The tri-turbo modification will improve efficiency, throttle response and torque at low rpm. And don?t forget: Porsche will reduce the weight by ca. 50kg...

I find it amusing that some are so opposed to progress that they come up with these assumptions. Just like the BMW tri-turbo opposition. I can't help but think of this group of old guys that have coffee every morning where I live. All they do is bi*ch about progress. I know your mother told you that you were unique and special, but I have to break it to you, Porsche engineers are smarter.

Well I am curious over how this technical engineering arrangement pans out but I believe it will be a blast to drive.

So what? Razors had 1 blade, then 2, then 4, then 5! Anything wrong with that? Why can't car manufactuters have multiple turbos if the resulting car is a better one in several aspects?

Interesting. I guess the VTG system currently insatalled is just not up to the task of working doubble time to meet the demands of low and top end HP needs?? My next question would be about space consumption in the engine bay. How would they manage to accommodate for the third turbo? It all sounds promising.

The 911 Turbo is unmatched for its balance of performance, comfort, driveability and price (I know some do match some of the aspects, but none matches ALL the aspects.). It is simply perfect... So was the last one... SO was every one before that... Ok, thats it, I cant wait to see this one!!!

Porsche are still living of their reputation from pre-millenium. Ferrari and Lambo are at a higher level. The car everyone is chasing is the Datsun GTR! Porsche must step up, or give up.

interesting will be how the Nissan will answer to the 911 Tri-turbo...maybe also the next GT-R will have 3 turbos?

looking at some responses, I can see that people are opposed to porsche or bmw's new turbo system or downsizing trend. But... Porsche and BMW isn't your back street tuners.
