Peugeot is gearing up to build a hot version of its new 208 supermini and we have caught a development mule doing its latest round of testing in winter conditions. It was caught just after the car was delivered to a town in the middle of Scandinavia and is easily identifiable by the dual exhausts that we see poking out the rear of the vehicle.

The body work from the regular Peugeot 208 is being worn by this mule, we expect a more aggressive appearance with larger air intakes on the front fascia when the production stage is reached.

It will be powered by a down-rated version of 1.6-litre turbocharged engine used in the Peugeot RCZ coupe and should be good for around 154 horsepower (114 kW / 156 PS ). It will enable the 208 GTI to accelerate from 0-60mph in under 7 seconds before hitting a top speed of around 140mph. There are also rumors that an even hotter 200 hp version is in the works as well.

The new 208 GTI is essentially a spiritual successor to the 205 GTI that ended production in 1993, it still enjoys iconic status among certain circles so this latest model is likely to garner plenty of attention. Upon launch, it will go head to head with the Citroen DS3, Volkswagen Polo GTI and Ford Fiesta ST.

Gorgeous!! I love how they made it a bit smaller than the 207 yet a lot sexier.

Bi-polar design. Tbh I have to say this is a step in the right direction compared to the 207.

definitely looks better than the 207! I also like the fact that they bucked the trend and went back to their roots, it just would be great if they 308's successor follows suit... ugly rear? I don't think so, I think they have a winner with this one!

IMO Best effort by Peugeot since the 205 GTi. I would buy this car, which is more than I would say for the 206 and 207.
