The replacement for the new Peugeot 308 was spotted for the first time undergoing early testing in the development of the vehicle. The natural name for the next generation model would be the 309, but Peugeot has already used this name for a mid-size model they unsuccessfully sold between 1985 and 1993. Therefore the French brand has gone back to the model's roots and decided to name it the 301.
The model you see in the photos is a prorotype mule for the new 301, wearing the body of the outgoing 308. The platform being developed will be shared with the Citroen C4 and DS4 with an engine line-up that will consist of several diesel and petrol options.
Peugeot will initially launch with the 5-door hatchback version; a 3-door will also be available in selected markets. Further down the line expect to see a 301 SW Prologue (estate), 301 CC (cabriolet) and if we are lucky, a high performance 301 RCZ Coupe.
