Volkswagen Up! GT reportedly approved for production
Volkswagen GT up! concept 14.09.2011

According to a recent report by Pistonheads, Volkswagen has confirmed that the Volkswagen Up! GT will be heading for the production line. The model was revealed in pre-production form at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year alongside four other Up! Concepts.

The more powerful model is set to get a performance upgrade from the regular Up! which boasts power outputs of 44 kW (60 PS / 60 bhp) and 55 kW (75 PS / 75 bhp). The three-cylinder power unit in the Volkswagen Up! GT will be treated to a turbocharger which will boost output to more than 73kW (100 PS / 98 hp). Power will be passed to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission system.

Volkswagen would like to market the model as a new moulded Golf GTI but many purists may see it as a spirtual successor to the Lupo GTI.

I think this is the way to go with the GTI. It got too big. Keep the R32 for the Golf version. A tuned 3-cylinder turbo small car could be fun.

If done properly it might. VW turbo engines usually give out more than promised and 1.2 TSI for example has already virtually non existent lag so would work great in a small car like this. But you are right renault knows how to make a hot hatch so probably the chassis wont be as good in a VW..
