Could be lighter, more efficient

New details are starting to emerge about the 2014 Volkswagen Passat (Euro-spec).

According to Auto Motor und Sport, the model will ride on the MQB platform which will also underpin the redesigned Golf and Audi A3. This should enable the entry-level Passat to weigh approximately 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs). Additionally, the platform sharing will reduce costs so the car is expected to have more standard equipment including an infotainment system and Bluetooth/iPod connectivity.

Under the hood, we can expect a variety of diesel engines that will meet the strict Euro 6 emission standards.
The petrols, on the other hand, will reportedly have a start/stop system and cylinder deactivation technology. Sadly, the 3.6-liter V6 could be replaced by a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder but that isn't official as of yet.

There's also word of a plug-in hybrid variant with a 1.4-liter TSI petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. This will reportedly enable the model to produce 170 PS (125 kW / 168 hp) and travel up to 50 km (31 miles) on electricity alone.

Sadly?? Sadly?! That's the best news I've heard in like a year. Even if it's detuned from the TT-RS The sound alone makes the change worthwhile and it would be obscenely easy to modify. If they do switch, this is my next car.
