Volkswagen developing plug-in hybrid for U.S. - report
Could travel 30-35 miles (48-56 km) on electricity alone
Volkswagen recently introduced the Jetta Hybrid at the North American International Auto Show and now there's word that a plug-in hybrid variant is in the works.
According to Car & Driver, the German automaker is developing a plug-in hybrid powertrain that will use a turbocharged 1.4-liter petrol engine, an electric motor and undisclosed battery. This could enable the vehicle to travel approximately 30-35 miles (48-56 km) on electricity alone.
Additional information is limited, but the magazine says the model will be launched soon and the powertrain could eventually be offered on the Beetle and US-spec Passat.
