Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet in the works

Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet in the works
Mercedes Ocean Drive Concept

According to a recent report stemming from the UK, Mercedes are looking to expand the S-class lineup with a four-door cabriolet model. The new variant will join the regular sedan along with a new long wheelbase version that replaces the Maybach and a two-door S-class coupe that replaces the current CL-class.

The source of the information is Dr Uwe Ernstberger, Mercedes program manager for the S-Class. “The S-Class is the best luxury car in the world, and we have many surprises in terms of technology for the new model,” he said. “It will deliver something very different to its rivals – and it will have a much broader range.”

The new four-seat cabriolet will draw its inspiration from the Mercedes Ocean Drive Concept that was originally unveiled to the world back in 2007.

Good idea, but why does it look like a giant Chrysler product? You can clearly see the influence of the Chrysler/Diamler partnership. Since the Maybach is headed for extinction (rumored) why not style it closer to that instead of the Chrysler 200 convertible.

it looks like a follow up to the Cadillac Ciel concept LOL! Mercedes needs to get rid of those miserable Maybachish wedge tail lights! It is ruining all their cars!!! Maybach is an epic fail using its tail light is really just silly!

I'd rather they keep the CL than have an S coupe. I'll struggle to view the S coupe to be as sporty as the CL coz I associate the S with luxury more than peformance.

Don't forget that the W140 chassis coupe was known in 1997 as the S-Class and in 1998 as the CL-Class. For example, the only difference between the 1997 S600 Coupe and the 1998 CL600 was the model designation on the trunklid. Long live the Concept Ocean Drive!!!

I guess this is a really hard engineer project because of its 4 doors insted of 2 doors and a rigid back. It is easier if they are suicide doors. Yes it looks like a chrysler!

A hallmark of quality on the Concept Ocean Drive is the uninterrupted transition from the bonnet into the grille surround, a signature Mercedes-Benz design first seen on the 1990-2002 R129 SL-Class. So many current M-B cars still emulate the R129's grille, but their bonnet shutlines betray the integrity of the original design, probably for cost-cutting reasons. The Concept Ocean Drive's grille looks strong and proud and it would be a great shame if future Mercedes-Benz cars failed to match this concept's optimistic presence.

Actually, it was C126 in 1981 that began that trend, just saying...

There were many 4 doors convertible back in the 50s. Now it would be an engineering marvel if they can make a 4 doors hard top convertible without it looking like Quasimoto and be functional.

Unlike in the 50s, the biggest challenge will be passing side impact and roll-over tests. But with new high-boron steels, hot-forging of said steels and Pre-Safe Structure, this should be doable.

If this is anything of what it will look like put myt name on the list-I would like to know if it is 4 or 5 seater and in the rear the tail lights need to have a look of their own not from the other benzes, like the Maybach. The car seems to have almost too much in straight lines, like accross the trunk--DO NOT CHEAPEN THIS CAR IN ITS DESIGN OR MBZ WILL BLOW IT. PARTNERSHIP WITH CHRYSLER IT SEEMS WITH THIS CAR AND CHRYSLER COMES THROUGH MORE THAN DAIMLER
