BMW M550d xDrive coming in March - report
2012 BMW M5 - 15.6.2011

Could be offered as a sedan and wagon

Following yesterday's announcement of M Performance Automobiles, new details are starting to emerge about brand's product lineup.

In an interview with the DPA news service, BMW M GmbH President Friedrich Nitschke reportedly confirmed the M550d xDrive will be launched in March and offered as a sedan and wagon. It is expected to powered by a tri-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine with 381 PS (280 kW / 375 hp) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque. This should enable the sedan to average 6.3 L/100 km (37.3 mpg US / 44.8 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of 167 g/km.

Interestingly, the M550d will reportedly be joined by an X5 and X6 with the same engine. We've already seen teaser videos of the latter model, but this is the first time we've heard about the X5 variant.

I don't know the point of offering an M performance diesel version. The 535d is more than enough. If you want a fast 5er get the petrol 550

I agree that real M should big petrol V8 etc. But diesel is getting more and more important. I think its a good move. More important, that are a lot of people that are about the looks not the drive, althoug this should drive quite well

its kinda like audis` "S-line".. trim, which u can put on any car, with any engine. (pls dont anyone stab me, im not saying they copy) i agree with the "M package stategy", they only thing that bothers me, as i xplained it before, is that having a car with 3 turbos .. i think it would be a big headache. (coolers, pipes etc).

I know by hand that the first 535d twin turbo gave a lot of problems, in some cases the engine block cracked. But this is not like S-line, because is not an M kit, it is actually an M car (M kits are differemt from M cars)

GRAVE: if the 535d is more than enough and we don't need de 550d. Why do we need the 550i, M5? The 535i should be enough

just don't think about a couple of dollars when you buy a car for 100k

There should only be one 'M' car in any series. It's confusing, dilutes and devalues the 'M' brand.

I totally disagree, BMW is coming out with an extremely fast and fuel efficient 5 Series for people who want both and not spend the money for a M5. Once these cars come out all other manufacturers will copy them, just watch.
