2014 Audi R8 comes into focus - rumors
Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro

Promises to be lighter, more powerful

We've already reported on the Audi R8 facelift, but new details are starting to emerge about the redesigned model that is due in 2014.

According to Car, the next-generation R8 will have an evolutionary design that eschews the iconic sideblades. This is a bold move, but we can also expect a number of weight saving measures which could enable the vehicle to be 100 kg (220 lbs) lighter than its predecessor.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but the magazine says there will be a naturally-aspirated V8 with 450 hp (336 kW / 456 PS) as well as a V10 with 550 hp (410 kW / 558 PS). Eventually, the V10 could be replaced by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS). Sadly, the manual transmission will reportedly be dropped.

The auto manual is a good thing with these super high powered vehicles. No more missed shifts and it keeps both hands on the wheel. The regular manuals actually slow these high powered engines down therefore the need of the auto manuals.

You don't need auto, it does make it easier for traction control and stability control programs. Also launch control.

Also if you need both hands on the wheel while changing gears you don't know what you are doing. In 7 years of driving stick I've never changed gear while turning, downshift if needed comes before the turn and upshift after. Even with an automatic if you are hitting the paddles while turning you don't know what you are doing and should stay out of performance cars.

actually you can easily lose control of a car in a straight line. It just depends on how much torque and how much traction you got. it's not just about the driver's skills. Audi's choice of removing manual is probably because 1) manuals are increasingly more expensive to outsource- companies like ZF and Ricardo are making it harder for manufacturers to outsource manual trannies and 2) the cost of maintenance under warranty from burnt cluthes, from a factory standpoint, is outweighing the "drivers pleasure" when it comes down to making a decision like that. Think about how many drivers blow clutches of manual supercars and companies like Audi covers it under warranty. Sad reality is that manuals will be extinct, save from small 4cylinders.

I believe ZF only manufactures automatic transmissions. I also doubt Ricardo is making it hard for manufacturers to come to them with orders considering they are seeking investors due to a slow down in the economy/market. Also an automatic transmission is roughly 5x more expensive than a manual in a $/hp comparison. Clutches are dirt cheap, I paid 400$ for a 400hp SPEC racing clutch, labour was another story but you have more labour on an automatic. A friend of mine paid 7500$ for a CVT transmission on his Altima, and the transmission in the GT-R costs roughly 24,000$. The reason has nothing to do with automatics being cheaper than manuals because that's simply not the case, it has to do with fuel economy, traction/stability control programs/adaptive cruise control etc..Also, market demand plays a big factor, the US is still the main buyer of cars in the world, and the culture here in NA is built around the Automatic transmission, you'd be hard pressed to find a Fiat 500 in manual on a dealer lot.

Its a pretty advanced awd. Probably tuned very closely to how the one in the Porsche's and Lamborghini is. 90% at the rear unless there is tire slipping. Also if they use a DC transmission like in the Porsche 911 Turbo this thing will be retardedly fast.

For some reason I see the NA v8 replaced by the Turbo 4l, they are fazing the NA high output v8 out. As for the v10, it wouldn't surprise me if it was a Turbo version like in the rs6.

the r8 sideblades is the r8 signature. and how can they weigh 100 kg? they are practicaly some holes in the side and covered with CF. how can taht weigh 100kg? or is audi is led not cf to cover those holes. such lies. keep the sideblades

Losing 100 kg alone enough without adding power. I think they will use the 4.0 in both models with defferent outputs. Standard version will have S7 output (420hp) and the more powerful version will have the S8 output (520hp)

Sadly manual is a dyeing breed and shortly all the rules for driving will change. Both of the Audi R8 both quattro AWD. I would prefer a normal manual to a dsg auto gearbox on a twin turbo to control the turbos and use the gears to have some fun with. If you do it correctly with manual their won't be any need to miss gears or crash gears. VW has done a good job with keeping the beetle to a silimar car from the first of the new beetle model from the original

They way i see it i see more V10 version then the V8 R8 If it aint broken dont fix it. And if the new V8 would be as much powerful as the V10 then why not use that twin-turbo V10 from the RS6 and give it more pwer as much as 650-700hp and call it the RS8? Perhaps im dreaming too much
