Suzuki Swift Sport priced at £13,500
2012 Suzuki Swift Sport 13.12.2011

Suzuki GB has announced the new 2012 Swift Sport with a price of £13,500. With UK sales of 6000 since launch in May 2006, the UK remains an important market.

Revealed in Frankfurt this past September, the supermini features a 1.6-liter engine producing 134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS) and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to a variable air intake and variable valve timing the Swift Sport which uses the same engine as its predecessor now makes 13 PS (10 kW) more. Equipped with a six speed manual transmission 0-62 mph takes 8.7 seconds with a maximum speed of 121 mph. Combined fuel consumption is 44.1 mpg while emissions are 147g/km.

Creature comforts include auto air conditioning, fog lamps, push button start, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, HID Projector headlamps with headlamp wash and rear privacy glass.

As the performance flagship of the Swift model range, sporting attributes include an aerodynamic body kit, upgraded sport tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels with 45-series low profile tires and sport seats.

* Global Swift sales of 2.2 million since May 2005.
* UK Swift Sport sales of around 6,000 since launch in May 2006.

The Swift Sport is the performance flagship of the Swift model range and offers higher levels of tuning, steering and braking performance than the standard Swift on which it's based. The sporting experience and everyday practicality of the previous model have earned many devoted fans in approximately 40 countries and territories around the world.

The new Swift Sport has the same DNA as its predecessor, but reflects the concept of developing a refined sport compact from the new Swift 1.2 litre launched in the UK late last year. Befitting its status as the new performance flagship of the Swift model range, it reflects the pursuit of even better handling, driving performance, environmental compatibility and an uncompromising focus on quality. Overall, it offers a rewarding experience of Suzuki's sporting DNA.

Now, Suzuki has realised even higher levels of Swift performance and styling and combined them with improved fuel economy and environmental performance to create a sports compact that is an ideal match for today's needs. The result is the all-new Swift Sport.

The new Swift Sport's exterior design reflects the model's evolution towards a more sporting look. Aerodynamic parts exclusive to the new Swift Sport control the airflow, suppress lift and give the car a lower visual centre of gravity. Newly developed High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with a metallic-grey coating as well as new design rear combination lamps heighten the sense of dynamism expressed by the exterior design.

Sporty, exclusive design features in the new Swift Sport's cabin heighten the driving pleasure and a high-quality look and feel generates pleasure of ownership with new design sport seats in an exclusive fabric together with a five-dial meter cluster that combines easy legibility with an uncluttered look.

Greater toe and camber rigidity for the torsion beam, greater lateral rigidity in the torsion-beam bushings and larger rear wheel bearings enhance stability at the rear under hard cornering. Increased spring rates for the front and rear coil springs and the addition of rebound springs in the front suspension struts significantly contribute to stability by providing greater roll stiffness. Modifications to the steering-gearbox member, suspension-frame member as well as larger front wheel bearings all boost yaw response, resulting in handling that has evolved even further from that of the previous Swift Sport.

Engine
The new Swift Sport's M16A engine is based on that of the previous model and now offers more power combined with lower emissions. Thanks to the addition of a variable intake system, optimisation of the intake VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and increased valve lift, maximum output is up from 92kW (123bhp) to an impressive 100kW (136hp) with the new model. Maximum torque is up from 148Nm to 160Nm at a slightly lower engine speed of 4,400rpm enabling the driver to enjoy superb performance across the rev range. The engine's high output is combined with improved fuel economy; CO2 emissions are down around 10 per cent from 165g/km to 147g/km and a revised exhaust system now yields a sportier note.

Transmission [Designed for sporty, fuel-efficient driving]
The new Swift Sport's manual transmission was developed specifically to take full advantage of the M16A engine's performance. The use of six gears allows sporty driving combined with improved fuel economy. A triple-cone synchromesh for first and second gears permits lower shift effort and a larger counterweight at the transmission end of the shift lever yields a sporty shift action that is now lighter and more positive.

Safety [Newly evolved protection]

* Comprehensive range of safety equipment
* Seven airbags as standard equipment
* ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) as standard equipment

The new Swift Sport represents an evolution in terms of safety. Comprehensive safety technologies mean it offers the same control and peace of mind as the new Swift.

Extensive use of high-tensile steel and computerised structural analysis keep the body light while promoting safety, There are seven airbags (including curtain and a driver's knee airbag), and the pillars incorporate shock-absorbing materials that soften any contact with occupants' heads. These safety enhancements have contributed strongly to the new model attaining an insurance group rating of 18 - down from Group 23 of the previous model Swift Sport.

Dimensions
The keys to the Swift's nimble handling include wide track and a short wheelbase. With the new Sport, Suzuki carries forward these fundamental attributes and has further refined them. New dimensions combine with increased rear-suspension firmness for better straight-line and cornering stability. They also add to a road-hugging profile that communicates the new Swift Sport's enhanced handling and performance.

The new Swift Sport's strong presence belies compact dimensions that make it exceptionally nimble. Wide front and rear track and a short wheelbase (key characteristics of the Swift series) combine with chassis systems that include an exclusively designed rear suspension to ensure sharper handling and outstanding high-speed stability. Full dimensions compared with the previous model are as follows:

New Swift Sport is available in five metallic / pearlescent colours which are as follows:

Silky Silver metallic
Kashmir Blue Pearl metallic
Cosmic Black Pearl metallic
Cool White pearl metallic
Ablaze Red Pearl metallic

In line with other models in the Suzuki range, new Swift Sport models are covered by a three-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty; and by Suzuki Assistance, providing 24-hour UK and European roadside assistance, recovery and associated services for 12 months as well as a 12-year perforation warranty. Service intervals are every 9,000 miles.

I like it, but sadly it looks faster than it goes and that's not something I look for in cars, in fact its the opposite.

The performance is anything but sporty. Again Suzuki have completely missed the target with this car. Tarting up the stock model with a body kit and slapping a sport badge on it is a massive fail. Ok so they have a sports suspension and seats but the performance figures hardly warrant the changes. Didn't they learn from past mistakes?
