Audi confirms BMW X6 competitor, X4 decision still pending
Audi Pikes Peak quattro concept car design sketch 06.01.2003

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler acknowleged earlier this year that Audi was considering a BMW X6 rival. Now design boss, Walter de' Silva, in an interview with Automotive News Europe at the Bologna motor show, has gone a step further and confirmed that Audi has signed off on the project.

Potentially known as Q6, the SUV-coupe crossover will slot between Audi's Q7 and Q5 models.

BMW has proven the pioneering X6 design with its sloping roof line has been a success, and Audi as well as Mercedes-Benz with their GLC wants in on the action. First launched in 2008, the BMW X6 was already ranked 5th top-selling premium large SUV in Europe while the BMW X5 held the top spot.

Audi has set its goal to surpass BMW as the top-selling premium brand by 2015.

Meanwhile, a top Volkswagen executive told Automotive News Europe Audi was also considering another smaller SUV, possibly called Q4, to compete with the BMW X4. Confirmed by BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer, the X4 could hit the market in 2014.

Love how everyone criticized BMW for introducing the X6, well, look where we are now: Audi and MB trying to catch BMW on that platform. Bunch of hypocrites..

Did I miss the pro-SUV memo? Personally I'm tired of all the SUVs, even the convertibles and the slopey roof one(s).

These are old sketches for the Q7, but they still look so dramatic, unmistakable AUDI branding.. love seeing them again. Hopefully Audi keeps this look for a long time..

Nah. Kia copies. Audi is just entering a new niche. I guarantee you: Audi will not be copying the X6's styling anymore than the A7 was a copy of the 5GT.

Kia's design director, Peter Shreyer, came from Audi: http://www.carbodydesign.com/archive/2006/07/26-peter-schreyer-kia-design/

the name q6 is so similar to x6, they need to name it differently so that at least people who don't have knowledge about cars can buy it without knowing that actually Audi has cheated :)

I was not an initial X6 fan. I don't think it looks bad. I just don't understand sacrificing the utility. So, it's not just an anti-BMW thing. I also don't get the Honda Crosstour or the Acura ZDX (although I suspect their sales suggest no one is getting them either). If AWD in a nice package is the goal, why not get an Audi TTs or TT-RS? If it's slightly sportier utility, the Land Rover Evoque would be my choice.
