Porsche 911 has least defects among older vehicles according to German T?V
2001 Porsche 996 Turbo 08.12.2011

German Technical Inspection Agency, TÜV, has reported the Porsche 911 was the most trouble-free of any vehicle in its age group for the second year running. Regardless of being seven, nine or eleven years old the 911 registered in general technical inspections the fewest defects among all vehicles.

A testament to the long-term quality and strong residual values of all Porsche models, the 911, Boxster and Cayman models held five of the ten best rankings across all age groups.

The TÜV report compiled data from approximately eight million general technical inspections conducted between July 2010 and June 2011. As a result, almost 18 percent of seven year old vehicles, 22 percent of nine year old vehicles and 26 percent of all eleven year old vehicles exhibited such serious defects that they only received their TÜV certificate the second time around.

It sounds great, but then you start to realize that they don't take the milage into account. How many miles these GT3s or even Carreras make every year? Probably 1/5 or even less of what diesel VW Passat will do.

Porsche owners actually drive their cars more than you'd imagine, and the article clearly says "defects", not issues. Mileage would have nothing to do with that. Besides, it isn't a secret that Porsche builds some of the most reliable cars on Earth.

Well Porsche have been making the same car for the last 40 or so years. So they better get it right.

@ nforspeed91.. far from it. the 911 may not have changed in design as much as other cars but its technology has always been leading the automotive industry. If we should ever be ok with a car breaking down more than the others, it should be the 911.

Got 147,2XX km on my 04 C4S... no major issues other than Wear and Tear. Now my 03 Passat 1.8T with 222,4XX km lets see Drive Shafts, Trans Rebuild, All Coil Packs (Twice), PVC Valve, Control Arms, CTS, Thermostat, Both Front Wheel Bearings, i can go on and on... Most of these issues were between 50-150km... she has been nice since :P. Both these were bought brand new. Also just got a 2012 Jetta last month, lets see how that goes :P

Buddy, no offense but if I had that many problems on my car like you have with your Passat I would never buy the same brand again.

I find it interesting that they pictured the 996 model, which is known (at least for the 3.4 litre Carreras) for catastophic failure of the bottom end, and blowing holes into the side of the engines. Look it up.

This is True with the N/A 996's and 997.1's But you only hear about the ones that Have a IMS Fail. You dont hear about the ones that dont... like mine 147,2XX km on my 2004 996 C4S. Also the one pictured above is a 996 Turbo that and the GT3/GT2 have the Porsche Factory Race GT1 Motor which is Bulit Proof, same Motor that was used in the Porsche GT1 Lemans Car and 99-08 Porsche Factory Cup Cars. This motor was also used in the 993 Turbo and 997.1 Turbo/GT3/GT2... As far as my Experiance with my car nothing that broken that i have not broken myself and regular ware & tear items

Can't say I've ever heard of the 997 having engine issues. and yes, you are correct that the NA ones have issues. I wasn't trying to slag off Porsche as I'm considering my first 911 in February (need a break from BMW).

Apart from the topic - just look at this green Turbo. IT'S STILL SO BEAUTIFUL AFTER ALL THE YEARS! And it still could battle with most current sportscars.

No doubt Porsche makes very well engineered cars... BUT...you also have to take into account that the typical Porsche owner will also service their cars more diligently than say the guy that bought the Opel...(Opel being chosen because you see so many ragged Opels on the road in Germany...) So whatever faults could be found during inspection is probably already taken care of prior to inspection.
