Supercharged Toyota GT 86 in the pipeline

Supercharged Toyota GT 86 in the pipeline
2012 Toyota GT 86

The Toyota GT 86 and their Subaru and Scion siblings have been well received so far, however general consensus is there is still room for improvements. You might be pleased, yet unsurprised to hear the Japanese manufacturer is working on an even hotter version.

The source of the information comes from the GT 86's chief engineer Tetsu Tada who has confirmed the hotter model is well past the consideration stage. In fact, test cars are already out on the road and being evaluated by Toyota Racing Developments.

The existing Subaru sourced 197bhp (147 kW / 200PS) 2.0 naturally aspirated boxer engine will benefit from a supercharger which should boost the overall power output by at least 50bhp. The existing chassis is believed to be strong enough to easily cope with the extra power, but Toyota will be working on an improved suspension system.

Interestingly Tada also revealed some performance specifications of the standard model. This is something we have been craving for since the unveiling of the Toyota GT 86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. The standard GT 86 will accelerate from 0-62mph (0-100kph) in around 6.8sec in addition to a top speed of 143mph (230 km/h).

exactly! The Genesis Coupe (2.0T) does the exact same time from 0 to 100Kph, noting that it has 26hp more.

I agree that for 200 hp it has great performance but why does it just have 200? It should have at 210 or 220 to compete with the Civic Si

No it doesn't, because this car is at least 200lbs lighter than Si.

If the 2.0t Nissan Silvia had 250bhp in 1999 and the current 2.0t hyundai sonata has 274bhp, then Toyota must pump out 300bhp of their engine if they want a decent supra reviver

It's none of those, it's a successor to AE86, some sources might say that it is also a successor to 2000gt as well.

This figure was pretty much expected and for sure TRD will be putting the power figures more into the Japanese power category of 206kw bringing into real contention but as it is a joint effort for toyota and Subaru we should expect this to be a turbo rather than a supercharged version....makes sense on costs too as Sti are already sitting on this turbo and boxster engine format. Can already hear this car once people start modifying this...probably end up mistaken this car for a subi.
