New 3-row, 7-seater will be built in North America and be tailored to compete against the likes of the Honda Pilot

Volkswagen is working on a new 3-row, 7-seat crossover/SUV for the North American market to rival the likes of the Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer.

According to a report by Car & Driver, the German automaker is pushing further ahead in creating a U.S. Lineup in accordance with American automotive tastes. The new crossover/SUV will likely use the North American Passat platform and will be built at either Volkswagen's plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee or at its plant in Mexico.

Powering the new model will likely be the 3.6 liter V6 that currently goes into the North American Passat. Since the new vehicle is still a few years away, VW may also opt to offer a 3.0 liter diesel unit with the SUV.

Prices should be competitive with the likes of the Honda Pilot so expect an entry-level price tag of around $30,000.
