Maybach axed, last models slated for 2013 - report
S600 Pullman to fill the gap
After months of speculation, Daimler has reportedly decided to phase out Maybach.
Citing high-ranking sources, Autocar is reporting Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche will axe the brand in order to focus more attention on Mercedes. As one insider commented, "We've come to the conclusion that it is better to cut our losses with Maybach than to continue into an uncertain future with a brand that has failed to live up to original sales expectations."
If everything pans out, the last Maybachs will be built in early 2013. To fill the gap, Mercedes will reportedly offer a new S600 Pullman.

it's a real shame, because, i preferred the Maybach Marque over the other contenders, like the Rolls Royce and Bentley Continental, oh well, they have to do what they have to do

Daimler thought in 2002 when they were launching the brand that they can use all of the components , parts and design language from MB line up and rich will buy it. Wrong. They should rather completely redesign Maybach, to look original and compare with Rolls-Royce than axed the brand. Shame

While I respect your opinion, that course of action would require a very large up front investment for a new platform, versus using an existing platform, for an ultra premium market that already has a lot of options to chose from. Although we are car enthusiasts, the business-side of things takes precedence.

Maybach didn't need a new platform just a different design language. Maybachs were nothing more than gussied up S-Classes and no luxury car is more bland that the S-Class.

Maybach was holding back the S-class.Maybach should have been an independent project and not based on an s-class.

Well, the time is right, and we saw this coming quite a long time ago IIRC. An S600 Pullman should be pretty cool though.

A boosted up S-class re-badge would not do justice for Maybach. MB should have realized it prior to relaunching the luxury marque in 2002. They thought using a low-cost R&D mechanism onto a ultra-premium brand would garner more sales, but alas all that came to a naught.

I believe that even with a new platform, the Maybach would still have had sales troubles.

While it definitely appears to be, the Maybach (W/V240) was EXTREMELY over engineered, and components from IT have trickled down into other Mercedes models. Mercedes never updated the interior or electronics package, so many believe it is simply a "boosted up s-class", but it is truly the superior product between it, Phantom and Arnage. Its a shame they dont plan to continue production, but its not surprising in the least. No one wanted the "better product", just the better looking one...

Never liked the pretencious design anyway. This car appears to manifest MB's lack of confidence as a luxury manufacturer. Better off alone this ''brand'' - the S-Class can compete RR by on its own.

Its about time. This was one of Mercedes big mistakes. You can't just reintroduce an old name on a bigger looking S Class & think THIS will beat Rolls Royce & Bentley. Maybach, Hispano-Suiza or Packard are from a bygone era.

Let us hope Maybach Music Group (MMG) lasts more than Daimler's project.
