Ferrari designer tapped to style future Chryslers and Lancias
Lorenzo Ramaciotti - 23.11.2011

Badge-engineering a thing of the past?

Legendary automotive designer Lorenzo Ramaciotti has been tapped to create a new styling language for Chrysler and Lancia.

The name may not ring a bell, but Ramaciotti is a former Pininfarina stylist who helped to pen models such as the Ferrari F430, 550 Maranello and 612 Scaglietti.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Ramaciotti said "We are trying to find an international [design] language, which could have a place both here in Italy and in the U.S." He added, "We don't want to do pure badge-engineering" and "[Chrysler and Lancia] should be global in sharing platforms and strategies without dulling the product line."

Lancia never had a problem with designing beautiful cars. As far as the int'l design its all crap. A nice car is loved no matter the market. The best example is the latest Civic. Why did Honda have to design a different car for America? Americans would have prefered the Euro Civic

The problem I find with this is that Lancia and Chrysler are completely different in terms of style, and I don't see how a common identity could be defined without betraying either one's heritage. Moreover, the "global design" thing of making a car to please everybody more often than not ends up with a car nobody really likes (see the new-gen Micra for example). All this is quite saddening as regards the future of two great brands?

It's not only the design that matters. the quality, reliability, service and after sales support all needs improvement for chrysler.

We can debate details but this is good news. The new cars will look better than their predecessors.

I for ones would love to see a refreshed Chrysler design, almost all the current gen Chrysler branded cars look plain. I don't think changing the style of Chrysler cars a bit would be a bad idea, quality and reliability are important, but unlike Honda and Toyota(in reliability anyway), Chrysler is not well known for that. So making the car look more elegant and slightly more stylish, should definably help move the metal.

Truthfully Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge should all do well now with Fiat. Typically I am a Chevy guy as a kid and I have had Chrysler/Dodge/jeeps on and off but I alway felt quality, fit and finish, and drivetrain were at the bottom of the Big 3. Chrysler seems to have early obsolescence built early into their products. Typically their interiors are rental car quality where quantity is more important than quality. I feel Fiat will fix that and Chrysler could be up there with Chevy or hopefully European or Japanese quality and still make profits on small cars. It will be nice to see new future vehicles designs and less retro.

I'm sorry but interior plastic in some Fiat cars aren't anything to write home about. One of the first things I did during my first trip to Europe (as a grown up) was to go to a Fiat/Alfa dealership to check out the cars that I've always admired in the pictures. But I came out deeply disappointed at the quality.
