LEXUS UNVEILS THE NEW GS 250

V6 version of all-new luxury saloon debuts at Guangzhou motor show

KEY POINTS

Lexus reveals new GS 250 at the Guangzhou motor show in China
Powered by 206bhp 2.5-litre V6 Dual VVT-i engine with D-4S direct port injection
Six-speed ECT-i automatic transmission with sequential manual shift function and selectable drive modes
Equipped with the same innovations and safety features as the new GS 450h
To be launched in the UK alongside new GS 450h in June 2012
Lexus has revealed a further extension of its all-new GS luxury saloon range with the unveiling of the GS 250 at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition.

The GS 250 is powered by a 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine with D-4S direct port injection and Dual VVT-i intelligent valve timing. Maximum output is 206bhp at 6,400rpm and peak torque of 253Nm is delivered at 4,800rpm, giving the car nought to 62mph acceleration in 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 142mph. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 31.7mpg and CO2 emissions are 207g/km.

The engine is matched to Lexus's Super ECT-i close-ratio intelligent six-speed automatic transmission, with a sequential manual shift function. The system has been engineered to deliver faster shift speeds, earlier torque converter lock-up and downshift throttle blips, complimenting a range of different drive modes available through the GS 250's Drive Mode Select System.

Compared the current GS, the new model has a more spacious interior, with notably more head and legroom for rear seat passengers. It will be offered with a range of new technology features, including a 12.3-inch multimedia screen - the largest on the market. It will be available with a new S-flow air conditioning system with nanoe air purifying technology, and a new Mark Levinson audio system with up to 17 speakers.

The new GS delivers improved driving dynamics thanks to a bodyshell that has been rendered 14 per cent more rigid; front and rear suspension revisions; and an optimised seating position for the driver. The driver can also adjust vehicle behaviour to suit road conditions and driving preferences using the Drive Mode Select. This gives the option of Eco, Normal and Sport S modes, while versions equipped with Adaptive Variable Suspension offer a further Sport S+ mode for even more dynamic performance.

Safety provisions will include Lexus's advanced Pre-Crash Safety system, combined with Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, and a series of other systems designed to reduce the risk of an accident, including Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor and Lexus Night View.

The new GS 250 will be launched in the UK at the same time as the full hybrid GS 450h in June 2012; the range will include a performance-themed F Sport version. Further details will be announced nearer the time of launch.

I'm not normally interested in Lexus cars, but this is really lackluster. The power, performance, and fuel economy are all pretty bad - what's going on?

I agree it's strange especially considering the entry level Lexus the ES 350 comes with a 3.5 litre V6 and the "sport sedan" Lexus the GS comes with a smaller engine 2.5 litre V6. Which brings me to another question: Why would Lexus/Toyota use such a small V6 when even the German marques have now switched to Turbo/supercharged 4 cylinders. . ?

Because some people still buy Lexus thinking it's premium... Now I wouldnt be China would be the place where these would sell (they will buy the more modern, better looking germans).

The entry level Lexus would be the CT. Then comes the IS, which uses this same engine, unless you're in Europe, where the base is a 2.2 Diesel. The GS ( which is not attractive at all, btw ) comes with this engine, the regular 350 and a hybrid, and apparently there will be a GS F, although why they would bother with that is beyond me. Since you call yourself autoficionado might as well know something about cars.

I guess Tuga must be a Lexus fan. 1 thing I do know about Cars...I wouldn't buy such an expensive Toyota. If you would fine that explains how you like that weak V6...I was making a difference between entry level luxury and the sport sedan offerings (though I am being kind to even entertain the notion Lexus knows the difference) and most premium car buyers aren't looking for Hybrids (another Toyota misstep) in Europe as you put it we prefer diesel. Lastly, lets be honest...Lexus wouldn't exist without the US market, you can barely say they sell any cars in Europe....

Indeed, I am not enthused with the new front look that Lexus is putting on. It looks too busy and custom made. It seems Lexus is losing its good old self.

Funny, the Fiat with 1.4Liter gives the same power... no wonder.

When this model goes on sale, a number of other manufacturers will have 4cyl turbo engines that offer similar or better performance at lower price with lower weight. Subaru and Mitsubishi have 4cyl engines making around 300hp and BMW has one making about 240hp. I think Lexus wouldve been better off using the hybrid system in the HS250 uprated to these specs. But I guess when youre spending close to $50k on the base model GS, a 4cyl wont do.

A 4cyl works well in the 528i, so it should do fine here. This car is too big and heavy for the engine they're using, and the fuel economy isn't even all that good. Toyota has really screwed this one up, and I I'll be shocked if they sell any here.

...just to tweak Tuga a little more...maybe Lexus could ask to borrow GM 2.0 litre turbo it makes 270 horsepower & 290 lb ft...I would definitely pick a strong turbo 4 over a weak V6 anyday

The torque numbers aren't right. Probably it's 253NM and 190 lb-ft.

At least it doesn't look like the same damn car in 3 different sizes (Audi, BMW). I like it myself. It looks classy.

Irrelevant of the naysayers, Lexus will do well with this model. Want ugly front just look at the Caddy its bloody awful and the Lincoln is a yawn. This look is great alternative to M5 front look as well as the interior console. By the general silhoutte, Lexus is targetting the bimmer crowd. Actually the autosite German Autobild praises the looks of the new GS! Lexus use to be a great alternative to the American luxury crowd, now its time to graduate to the very discerning European luxury crowd.

Of course! Why shall I agree to pay for a cars with top technologies and best design, but with damn crappy quality? Am I an enthusiast of calling for service and begging to fit all those turbos, gaskets, injectors, suspensions which get out of order in German premiums? Lexus is for people who care about their time. And the front of new GS isn't so bad, though could be better, that's right.
