Volkswagen to replace 2.5 liter unit in U.S. with 1.8 TSI
VW 1.8 TSI engine - 18.11.2011

2.5 liter inline five-cylinder engine is used in the U.S. market Jetta and Passat models - the 1.8 is a turbo-charged four-cylinder unit

Car & Driver is reporting that Volkswagen has decided to replace its aging 2.5 liter inline five-cylinder in the U.S. market with its 1.8 TSI unit.

Volkswagen uses the 2.5 liter unit for the entry-level Jetta and Passat variants where it produces 170 hp (127 kW / 172 PS) and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm) of torque. The naturally-aspirated engine doesn't have direct-injection and its fuel-economy is not better than the 2.0 liter TSI unit that Volkswagen also offers in the Jetta with 30 more horsepower.

The 1.8 TSI unit is used in Europe in several Audi and VW models including the euro-spec Passat. In those European models it is configured to deliver 160 PS (118 kW / 158 hp) and 250 Nm (185 lb-ft) of torque.

The move shows that VW will bring its North American engine offerings in line with its European lineup where it is going almost exclusively with small displacement, direct-injection/turbocharged units such as the 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI and the 2.0 TSI.

I can't believe it's taken them this long to ditch the lump. The 1.8TSI is a brilliant engine.

Now what they need to do next, is bring the euro passat, and rename the american one as quantun, corsar or something different, bring the up or the polo, and seriously redesign the jetta...

If you want the Euro Passat, just get a CC... unless you're really that hard up on getting the fifth seat. Speaking of which, they need to offer the 5-passenger option on the CC that Europe gets.

We all praise the move, yet the Americans were buying this engine like candies. I drove it last Summer in a rental. It was OK but I would never buy it. It proved to me that car buyers are brand suckers. On the same trip I drove the Buick Regal and I was thrilled. I don't know how much more expensive the Buick is but I would give the extra money over the tasteless 2.5l VW.

Regal in the US is about $6K more, which is a HUGE amount when you're talking about a car that starts at $20K.

We just have different perspectives. Where I live, $6k-$10k is the price of the extras you put on a car. So I 'd go for a base Regal than a loaded Jetta.
