Loses 310 lbs (140 kg)

New details are starting to emerge about the 2012 Mercedes SL-Class.

Set to debut at the North American International Auto Show, the roadster will adopt an aluminum-intensive design that enables the car to weigh up to 310 pounds (140 kilograms) less than the current model.

Despite shedding weight, the SL will become 20% more rigid thanks to hydroformed beams and chilled cast longitudinal members.

There's no word on engine specifications, but the aforementioned changes will help to improve fuel efficiency by 30 percent.

In addition, the SL will have a new system called Magic Vision Control. It integrates the windshield washer nozzles into the wiper blades to ensure fluid won't be sprayed into the cabin when the top is down.

There will also be a new Front Bass sound system which has two subwoofers mounted in the footwells for improved audio quality.

Not shooting fluid all over the driver when the top is down, how about when just the windows are down. Mercedes has had a very hard time keeping this under control, heck both the ML500 I drive occasionally and the older 300 SEL I own in Portugal do the same damn thing. At least my SC400 doesn't do this, not even with the moon roof back and the windows all the way down at any speed.

Sounds like you need to clean out your drains and re-aim your nozzles. My C126 and W140 dont have this problem in the slightest, even with both side windows down in the 126. Mercedes has always taken particular care in water control and have been dramatically effective since the 70s.

I would disagree as the car has been doing this since it was new, right out of the dealer's lot and the car has been looked at by the dealer several times.

Ive never owned an ML, and dont really like them, so havent spent a lot of time driving them either. Its known Mercedes started cutting corners by the time of its inception, so that may just be a corner that was cut.

I like the general idea, the SL has always been a good car. Is it me, or does it seem that on the pictures of the silver one, something seems to be... missing? :)

Whats so bad about the wipers? They seem inovative to me. Nice that this car finally loses weight.

The wheelbase is too short for the size of this car. Too much hangover at the front and at the rear.

This one looks promising! Finally an all new SL... the old taillights lost the element of the SL.
