Decision could come later this year

In a recent interview, Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller revealed the company's decision to green-light an entry-level roadster depends on the global economy recovery.

Speaking with the Financial Times Deutschland, Mueller commented "The financial crisis is real and we need to see how far it develops." He added, if it "... leads to a cooling of the auto industry, then this would certainly impact our strategy."

Mueller indicated a decision could be made later this year or delayed until 2012. If the car is approved for production, it could be launched as soon as the third quarter of 2014.

i'm sure if the economy is that bad, there will be more people who are capable of / interested in buying an entry level porsche than a 911.

Actually it's not the case. Buyers of entry level (luxury) cars are of a bigger portion of the population. This bigger portion of the population are also more susceptible to the adjustments in the economy and tightening up wallet phenomena, getting fired etc... People looking at the 911 price tag are less vulnerable (although not totally) to the fructuations in the economy. Sure the sales in the 911 will also drop as they won't be getting the sales from outside the higher tier. But it's the high volume "niche" cars like what an entry level Porsche that is going to suffer.

I've been eagerly anticipating this, the Audi, and the VW Bluesport. Hopefully at least the VW will make it.

Just give us one of the three proposed cars. The VW makes the most sense as Porsche will price the new entry level car at the level of the Boxster then move everything else up. The only entry level Porsche is aused Porsche.
