Could be front-wheel drive?

The long-awaited successor to the Jaguar X-Type is coming into focus as a new report is indicating the model could be launched by 2015.

According to AutoCar, the entry-level Jag will be available in a number of configurations including a sedan, coupe and, possibly, a roadster.

Styling remains a mystery, but rumors suggest the car will be extremely aerodynamic with a number of 'premium' styling features. Inside, the cabin is expected to be high-tech with an emphasis on connectivity and large LCD displays.

Power will reportedly come from a variety of engines including a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol with approximately 170 hp (127 kW / 172 PS). There's also speculation of front-wheel drive and eight / nine-speed automatic transmissions.

I wouldn't pay much attention to the speculation, heck years ago WCF was claiming that the next generation Nissan Skyline GT-R would of had a twin turbo version of the Nissan VK series of V8 engines... it was a twin turbo six clearly.

It should be the same team still, Callum still works for Jaguar in their design department and he was the lead guy on the XJ project apparently.

Why so long? VW will have gone through another 2 generations of Golf by then. Now is the time to strike. The C-Class, new 3-series and A4 are all rather unexceptional so now would be the time to launch this kitten.

Considering Jaguar needs to take 3 years to place the 2.2l diesel unit into XF even though the engine is already there for years in Freelander(it is the pre-updated, but not much behind). It makes sense, they need to wait another 3 years before X-type revival will be launched, last gen is a Mondeo, this gen will be underpinned by the short wheelbase version from future Jaguar SUV (better call it a crossover ala XC60 instead of Freelander).
