US-spec Honda Civic to get an emergency facelift

US-spec Honda Civic to get an emergency facelift
2012 Honda Civic (US spec) - 20.4.2011

Can't come soon enough

The North American Honda Civic has been heavily criticized for its familiar styling and cheap interior, so the company is working on an emergency facelift which could be unveiled as early as 2013.

Introduced over the summer, the Civic was quickly met with consumer indifference. To fix this, John Mendel - Honda's American executive vice president - has confirmed the model will be updated ahead of schedule.

Speaking with Automotive News, Mendel said "I don't know how much we can do and how quickly [we can do it], but the comments of Consumer Reports and our customers have not gone unnoticed. We are appropriately energized."

Very loyal Honda customer here, but I have to agree that the US Civic is a total joke. Someone needs to get fired for this design. Recently got to rent the Hyundai Elantra and was stunned to see how much the competition has caught up. Honda needs to wake up. They no longer make the cheapest, most fuel efficient or most reliable car in the US.

Same feeling from me as well. Just hope that they could apply that "crazy" and "out of box" element as they did with the previous gen European Civic, as that was probably kind of a wake up call for the European competition. Now however it seems like Honda is the one to be waken up !

while Honda has been sleeping on the Civic, competitors (especially Korean competitors) woke up and have been working non-stop, bringing that out-of-the-ordinary stuff and creating a huge success. instead of having THIS 2012 boxy boring cookie cutter cutout, bring back that craziness of the 2006-2011 model that was the biggest success in the civic that Honda ever had haha. completely agree Doug

While I like the interior of the new Elantra, I still think Hyundai needs some help in the engine department, even with the 148 bhp "Nu" engine. Hopefully, Hyundai will switch to gasoline direct injection soon on the Elantra, which will boost engine power probably to almost 160 bhp and likely improve fuel economy about 4-7%.

It seems like the Japanese are falling asleep while the Koreans are attacking. Same thing that happened to the American manufacturers a couple of decades ago.

exactly my thoughts too... and something I would've never thought I'll ever say: I like these new generations of Korean cars... they've invested a lot in design and quality, while other manufacturers are napping... I just simply look at the new Ford Focus which as they say is full with new technologies but regarding the design... hmmm... it looks the way Korean cars looked many years ago... and this new Civic it is like they are choosing to go back in time! Too bad for them, because we, as customers, have plenty of brands to choose from

How these things can come alive from the design table???? The bad thing is that the ones who purchased this version of the Civic, are not going to be so happy next year, when the new or face lifted one gets into the showrooms!!!!

Sales figures of this new model must be below expectations.

I would agree from an ascetics and technical view the Korean and American brands have a far superior design. Honda hasn?t embraced any new technology or market position to distinguish it from the pack. The engineered by Americans for Americans philosophy must translate into the apathy of ?I?m just here for a paycheck?. Further resonating in the comment from the VP stating ?I don?t know how?.or how quickly?. In my opinion this sums up the brands transition into future developments as Millennials pass by unwilling to compromise on value, technology, and quality not just realiblity.

If you were to give it round headlights it'd scream Dodge Neon, or vise versa (hate saying that being a loyal customer/fan of Honda products). Still, I think public criticisms are greatly over exaggerated; it's no where near a bad design. Conservative? Yes, but that is what the Civic has always been (not to be confused with the coupe or 'Si' model). The only problem I see with the overall design is in the configuration of the front end, which looks too much like it's predecessor. When comparing this new model to the Civic based TSX, or even the older RSX, I guess Honda could have chosen an edgier/flashier design but previous designs for the Civic have always been based on the formula where conservative usually sells/wins. Perhaps times have changed, but I'm thinking it has more to do with competition within the industry that didn't exist several years ago rather than it's design. It's not a bad looking grocery getter if you were to ask me.

In one word, the car is boring. It looks like the design of an older version of the Civic, not the latest. The US consumers have expressed their dissatisfaction. Sales are way below expectations, Consumer reports bashed it and Honda needs to go back to the drawing board.

What happened to Honda? They used to be such a leader. I really can't understand how the most recent Civic even got approved. Seems like total complacency has set in with this company, which is sad. I remember back in the mid to late 80's and early 90's when Honda/Acura was something that people actually aspired to these cars, even though they weren't expensive, German, status symbols.

Didn't Honda delay the "new" version a year to go back to the drawing board because of stiff competition? I guess they couldn't think of anything so they came out with this. Now they are paying the price.

Didn't they bother to do some market research?

im pretty ambivalent toward hondas but when this body style came out i thought it was quite a revolutionary design... this latest redoing of the front and tail fascia is umm weak...

I think it'll be like the change between the 2001 and 2002 model year Civics, starting with a revised suspension. We'll probably see some interior upgrades, though I think it'll be more interior materials upgrade than a redesign of the whole front dash, which won't come until the mid-model change a few years from now.
