Volkswagen AG is on track to sell more than 8 million vehicles this year - surpassing both GM and Toyota to claim the top spot

VW is going to reach its lofty goal early.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen AG is on track to become the world's biggest-selling automaker this year. VW had planned on becoming the world's biggest automaker by selling 10 million units a year by 2018.

A survey of sales projections conducted by Bloomberg show that VW Group sales will likely rise by 13 percent this year with a total sales volume of 8.1 million units. For GM, the average projection was an 8 percent rise to 7.55 million, while Toyota is expected to see its sale actually fall by 9 percent in 2011 with a total sales volume of 7.27 million units. Toyota production was hampered in 2011 by the tsunami disaster that struck Japan in March of this year, slowing it sales because of a lack of deliverable vehicles.

VW is seeing tremendous growth so far this year with sales in China (the world's largest car market) rising by almost 20 percent for 2011.

Total VW Group sales (including all of its brands) have risen 16 percent so far this year (through the third quarter) to 6.2 million units.

For Toyota, it's a lost case with their boring designs and expensive cars. While GM is really proving to the market its dynamism, dedication, and persistent to provide better products.

So where Hitler has failed, economic Germany is succeding to conquer the world. Sorry, no offense to the Germans, I was joking. I admire and envy them, BUT VW the brand needs to upgrade its game more. With the exception of the Scirocco I find no VW that I would be interested in. And even though Audis are beautiful I refuse to own a car that looks alike across all models. Seats and Skodas don't inspire me so unless I can buy a Porsche there is no model among its 150 or so that I would buy at this moment. Please easy on the shooting.

Wow VW achieved its goal of becoming #1 manufacturer 7 years ahead of schedule. What will happen after the next 7 years given its aggressive strategy which has only just begun.

VW slashed the prices of their product drastically recently yet still make expensive looking car... i doubt that their reliability will ever match up to the toyotas or anywhere close and their engine choices are weak but the vw sure look good!

Did anyone have reliability issues with the new VW Brand cars (TSi engines, DSG Gearbox)?

They became number 1 becauae of the disaster that hit Japan and and the flood in Thailand which effected their factories and reduced their sales. otherwise they can not even come close to Toyota.

Very true. I went to drive Kia Optima and VW CC the very same day, even though CC rides much smoother but it's not even half equipped like Optima is and for less money.

Korea is moving up in the ranks, Japan is recovering from disaster at a rapid pace, and GM is.....slowly but surely, so this spike in the world's largest automaker for this year is going to be short lived for Volkswagen.

I live in Montreal, the drivers I cant stand the most are the arrogant Dubaholic VW Dub for life losers that patrole our streets. If this means that there is more of them out there that need a punch in the face, then I will go get my gloves ready. Cant stand any of them.

As a VW product owner , I wish VW will be not only interested in being the world?s largest but also the world?s best. The reliability is mediocre and service leaves a lot to be desired.
