BMW F10 M5 has new 0 to 60 mph time of 3.7 seconds
Car & Driver tests the M5 and gets a much healthier acceleration figure than BMW's own underrated 4.4 seconds (0 to 100 km/h)
Here's a little comfort for M5 lovers who had to get a little defensive about the car's official 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 4.4 seconds.
Now, American car magazine Car & Driver has clocked the 2012 BMW F10 M5's 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) time at 3.7 seconds, which makes it competitive with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG (with performance pack). The F10 M5 also covered the quarter mile in 12.0 seconds. Complete results of the testing will appear in Car & Driver's December 2011 issue.
BMW has a reputation for underrating their cars' performance values so it's not surprising that an outside test could wrench a "little" more out of the M5 than that official 4.4 seconds figure.

That seems way more reasonable. I was starting to wonder how the new S8 with all its size was quicker. But now this makes more sense.

0-60mph with 1-foot-rollout in 3,7 s. Add ~0.3 sec and you'll get the real 60mph time (97 km/h). Add ~0.2 sec for the 3-more-km/h and you'll get 4,2 s 0-100 km/h with 1 person onboard.

0-96km/h = 3.7 seconds, That's 25.95km/s-2 acceleration.
The transmision shift and tire slip account for 0.2 seconds at 63km/h
So actually it's 4.05 seconds total

Absolutely sensational. I can hardly wait until they hit the street. The M5 really makes a compelling arguement asking why you would look at any other car?

The porsche will be definitely faster, but the M5 is a car many of us can reasonably aspire to.

The Panamera Turbo alone would outsprint this. Car and Driver recorded the Panamera Turbo's 0-60mph in 3.3 secs. http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e61-m5-touring-discussion/146148-car-driver-test-results-panamera-turbo.html
Let's not even bring the Turbo S. LOL.

That's quick, good looking too. What's up with exhaust sound being piped through the sound system though......

0-96km is not 0-100. This would put the 0-100 at about 3.9-4.0. That being said, U must provide some room for deviation on each car. some M5's will do a 4.6-4.8 0-100 times, others 4.0-4.2. It ismpossible to produce several thousand cars with ALL THE EXACT same performance, no matter how uch the same the set-up is. Ask any tuner worth their salt- they will tell U that very same fact. From slight HP diff to a slight 'box diff, to a few K's on the clock- it all adds up. Respect the car tho, wifey has 1 on order, Im just sayin- keep performance possibilities open- ended...

Indeed :-) GT-R powered version, Switzer P800 destroy even such wonders as the Koenigsegg, Lamborghini and Hayabusa :-)

some people like subjective things like quality, and looks. Some people like things that don't have plasma coated cylinders you have to have overhauled fairly often. Some people can go faster on a motorcycle if all that matters is speed. Its about the whole package and you have know know and appreciate quality to know why the GT-R has been a sales failure. Came out in 2008, Ive seen maybe 3. I see $100,000+ Mercedes' everyday.

I love BMWs but the Nissan GTR is still the most bang for the buck just like the Datsun 240Z was in the 1970s
