Mercedes approves new straight-six engine family - report
4.0-liter V8s also rumored
Straight-six engines are a BMW hallmark, but their rivals in Stuttgart could be preparing to adopt the acclaimed engine configuration.
Citing a "friendly Mercedes engineer," CAR is reporting the company has approved a new engine family that will be launched in 2015. Details are limited, but the source said there will be a variety of new four-cylinders, inline-sixes (available in both single and twin-turbo guise) and downsized V8s displacing 4.0-liters.

hmmm. so bmw recently patented a v6 design and now merc is looking to do a straight six. Not opposed to the idea at all. Going to be interesting to see merc try to beat bmw at their own game and vice versa. :)

Inline sixes were common to BMW & Mercedes. Mercedes used an inline 3 litre six cylinder throughout their lineup and even as the entry level engine in the S class until around 1990 or so. Inline sixes are Good news!

I like this move a lot. This could really help to pull MB out of its doldrums.

4 litre V8's? They better be absolutely sensational or I'll be a sad panda.

Best news for a long time or at least not a 0.3 liter twin-turbo joke. One of the oldest schema's of engine seems to be newest and best so far strangely. It will be a good one I?m sure not only because of straight 6 is my favorite layout.

Straight sixes were standard fare for Mercs AND BMWs, as well as just about every other maker. Hardly a BMW 'trademark'.
They are inherently smooth because they give an overlapping power stroke. I had a W201 190E 2.6, which sounded fantastic.

mercs were always straight 4s and 6s, it was not untill the 60s that the 6.9 came out in the pullman then was put into the, 6.9 300sel making it the fastest sedan in the world in the 60's, the straight six cylinder was used until like 95, the w126s 6 was a 3ltr sohc 2valves per cylinder, then the w140 was given the twin cam 4valve per cylinder 3 ltr engine which was shared with the 300ce-24 of its time. i would like to see a return back to their roots, they seem to be doing that alot now, which is great, long live Mercedes!!!
