Audi e-tron Spyder in California [video]

Video shows the e-tron Spyder in motion using its advanced diesel-hybrid drivetrain

Here's a video released by Audi of America showing the e-tron Spyder out for a drive under the California sun in the environs of Malibu.

The Audi e-tron Spyder is a hybrid with a mid-mounted (rear) twin-turbo V6 TDI diesel engine producing 300 PS (221 kW / 295 hp) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque powering the rear axle, while two electric motors fitted to the front axle produce a total of 64 kW (87 PS) and 352 Nm (260 lb-ft) of torque. Weight distribution in an even 50:50.

The 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) sprint takes 4.4 seconds and top speed is an electronically-limited 250 km/h (155.34 mph). Fuel-economy is a mere 2.2 liters/100 km (106.92 US mpg) with CO2 emissions of just 59 g/km (94.95 g/mile). A fill-up of diesel fuel on the 50-liter tank will get you a range of more than 1,000 km (621 mi) but driving in zero-emissions electric mode the range is 50 km (31 miles) with an electric-only top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph).

Hmmm, ... so VW will get the Bluesport, Audi will have eTron (Bluesport + hybrid), and Porsche will get a gasoline 2.0 turbo four? This is quite a back paddling from the fully electric e-Tron Audi showed in 2009.

Audi eTrons are concepts. I'm not sure what engine the VW "BlueSport" will come with, but the Audi R4 is rumored to offer 2.0L I4 gas/diesel turbo engines and a 2.5L I5 turbo engine like the TT RS. The Porsche 550 is rumored to have a 1.9L 4-cylinder boxer turbo engine. All will be Spyder/convertible versions, no coupes. Porsche wants to attract the Mazda/Lotus motorsport racing crowd, and sell more Porsche vehicles to their loyal customer base. Audi wants a mid-priced/mid-performing version of its R8 and compete with the Boxster. I suspect all will sell very well and attract many fans of each brand.

If Audi doesn't make this and the Quattro they might as well stop making cars.

If the R4 will have a 2.0L and a 2.5, I wonder what they will do with the next generation TT.

If I remember well I read some times ago that the actual TT will be the last model developped by Audi. So no next generation of TT. (Sorry but I am not able to find back the link to the article)

The speculation I've read about the 2014 TT is pretty broad. Some say it will be a major facelift. Others say it will be built on the R4's mid-engine platform. Some say it will continue the same design language, others say it will be influenced by e-Tron. The mid-engine configuration will make it a serious Cayman competitor (especially with AWD), but it will loose some of the practicality of the current configuration.

I hate that they don't make the electric concept cars actually just electric. I understand the market for them isn't there yet, but why would they limit the electric only top speed to 37 mph? every time you drive it you will be using the diesel engine. I think the best route is making the option of all electric with the gas/diesel engine as a back up if needed. but limiting the speed of pure electric takes away almost all possibility of a solely electric drive.

If the electric top speed is not limited to something very low, the battery will last for about 5 minutes. Technically speaking, we're not there yet.

I think the market is ready, I don't think the economies of scale have caught up sufficiently to narrow the margin. What we desperately need is a break through in battery technology. Lithium batteries (rechargeable) are coming down, but they are still very heavy. Tesla went to a carbon fiber body to help offset the 800 pound battery.

Personally I'll have to disagree, I think it looks sleek and sexy. I'm sure there are people out there who like to complain if Audi creates a model that looks too much like another model and then complain if Audi makes a model that doesn't look like an existing model. Typically those people will tend to complain about everything thereby limiting the usefulness of their comments.
