Cruising in a Mercedes Benz 230SL - Keep the Spirit Alive

Fun video for classic Mercedes SL fans

Here's a fun video for classic Mercedes SL fans. Sent to WCF by director, Tamás Mészáros, the quirky tone of the sync-edited video is set by the music of Japanese blues/jazz band The Seatbelts and features a 1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL driving around. Mészáros says it's his first video shot with a DSLR. Regardless, we enjoyed watching and hope you do too.

Pity that M-B doesn't offer the current W172 model SLK250 with the 201 bhp 1.8-liter turbo engine and a seven-speed automatic here in the USA. Even with this engine, the SLK 250 would be decently fast and perfect as a tourer in the 230SL tradition. After all, the 230SL wasn't a speedy car, but it was certainly fun to drive.

For me, next to the 300SL of the 50s, this is the most iconic SL. I keep on hoping that Mercedes will somehow out do it. I confess I've gone through periods of shopping for one, but having tinkered one classic Mercedes back to life, I don't know that I have a commitment or space to do another. Of course, the Mercedes Restoration Center can provide me with a perfect specimen for over $200K, but I'm not sure I'd ever feel comfortable driving such a jewel in the cold cruel world. Maybe if I lived in the desert where there'd be little risk of rust. The W113 is genuine chrome and steel, with none of the obtuse rubber bumpers that followed on the R107. The R129 is well done, but the interior has some oddities (along with pneumatics), and the R230 just seems a tad over styled. Even though it's a fine car, it lacks the raw purity of the W113. This one certainly is a fine example of a W113. Ya just gotta love the painted hub caps. I'm hooked again.
