Audi will introduce a new 1.4 liter unit in the next A3 with cylinder deactivation technology

German magazine Auto, Motor und Sport has the scoop on the upcoming next-generation Audi A3.

The 2012 Audi A3 will come in four variants, divided into two pairs with differing dimensions and wheelbase length.

The 3-door and Cabriolet A3 variants will measure 4.26 meters long (167.7 inches) with a wheelbase of 2.595 meters (102.2 inches). The Audi 5-door Sportback and 4-door sedan (previewed as the Audi A3 e-tron concept) will measure 4.44 meters long (174.8 inches) with a 2.630 m (103.5 inches) wheelbase. The widths of all variants will be the same.

Audi design chief Stefan Sielaff says the A3 range set-up is similar to how the variants of the A4 and A5 ranges are configured - with the Audi A5 providing the Sportback, coupe and cabriolet variants. He also said the next Audi A3's interior will be influenced by the Audi A3 e-tron concept (pictured here) the automaker introduced at Auto Shanghai earlier this year.

For the next A3, Audi is also developing a new 1.4 liter petrol unit (producing 140 PS / 103 kW / 138 hp) with cylinder deactivation. The unit is able to shut down two of the four cylinders under a light load which can represent a saving of up to 1.0 liter/100 km in fuel-economy when traveling at a constant speed of 50 km/h (31 mph).

Audi is also planning on a three-cylinder diesel unit for the A3 as well as a natural-gas powered variant.

I have big hopes for the next A3. Hope that it looks very similar to the concept. In that case, it will be a killer! I mean especially with the new 1 series looking like the ugliest car in the world.

I own a 1999.5 (refreshed B5) Audi A4 1.8T (Turbo) Quattro Manual Sport Package with a lowered aftermarket "GT" coil-over sport suspension and ASA (BBS-licensed) 17" wheels and I get positive comments on it all the time. With an ECU chip its plenty fast on public roads. This new A3 sedan is the only newer Audi model that I would consider swapping for my B5 A4. I'm sure the M-Sport models are fun to drive, but I think the new 1 series look like toys.

@Mr You I agree with your observations... my brother's B6 140kW with sport package still looks sporty and it's interesting seeing how much street cred it has retained. I am hoping the sedan would be my next A3. I find the A4 too serious and a little large. This A3 sedan is a natural upgrade path.

I had a B5 and B6, they both had awful steering and suspension. Sure Audi carries a little cache on the streets, even the older models like these, but for me they're not drivers cars. Well built but no fun at all. Also had a '06 A6 for a year and that was the most benign motoring experience I've ever had.

Quite simply...In America you buy the Audi's b/c you want a premium brand but want to remain conservative-they look anonymous and dated. The problem is the A3 has always looked so cheap following this methodology. This new A3 concept makes the car a viable option to many more consumers.

By definition this class of car will be conservative. Its easier to lose a customer spending big bucks with flashy, trendy, hot-for-today styling than with something that's decent but could be a bit sexier. If you think the Audis look dated then I'm hesitant to hear your thoughts on the MB or BMW. Look at the 1, 3, 5 and 7 series BMW. They're all fug.

Is this essentially going to be a premium Jetta sedan, in the same vein as the A3 / Golf setup? Also, is anyone having a hard time viewing the photos?

this brand is just fxxking stupid... no one can even tell whether the photo is a A4 or A7 or A whatever.. this is just weak and boring

If there is such a phenomenon as colour blindness, there just might be Audi model blindness. Audi's target market is a little more sophisticated than being preoccupied with shallow considerations of shape alone... they also perceive scale. The 'family look' is by design and we like it. Audi drivers tend to not have inflated egos that they should pretend to be driving a 'unique-mass-production' vehicle. Get a Buggati or Lambo or Porsche for that! Am I the only one who has observed that a previous shape BMW looks much older than an equivalent previous shape Audi?

If this is close to the final design I think it is one of the most handsome designs for their line up yet. Much nicer than the current a4 with a sophistication in the sheet metal that's apparent in the A7. Overall a quantum leap forward for the A3 which looked dated 5 years ago. Now introduce the S3 and RS3 within 12 months of the regular model.

Lightweight RS3 with the engine far back and some trick suspension please. Also sort out the steering. Thanks. Actually I'll just wait for the RS1 :)

Here we go again with "they all look the same" comments. Get over it people. All Audis are beautiful, a tad bland, but they can work on that.

Excuse to this dead-boring car will be of course the doubtful idea of its technical superiority. Killer indeed. Nice example for a reason to buy an Alfa Romeo.

It looks better than BMW 1series, but so predictable and usual. That's why I will still buy BMW, at least they are trying something new, except from 3 series.

Yes everybody, all Audi's look the same. They never change. Each generation is the same as the last. The facelifts are meaningless. Each model looks the same as the next. That is why their sales have plummeted in recent years. They just didn't see it coming.
