BMW says it has no plans to bring a 3-Series Touring/wagon to the United States market but it still remains a possibility

BMW says it has no plans to bring the new-generation, F31 3-Series Touring to the United States market, as they had for the current generation.

BMW spokesperson Friedbert Holz told WCF in an e-mail:

"At the moment there are no plans to bring the new BMW 3-series Touring to the US market, as it was in the past. In the USA the Touring obviously still has an image of a Station Wagon (which is a pity!), but may be the Americans [will] change their minds."

Though, that doesn't completely rule out a 3-Series Touring/wagon will make it stateside, as Autoblog.com is reporting.

But as Ian Robertson, BMW's head of sales and marketing, told Inside Line, "The sport-activity vehicle is still dominant in the U.S. There would need to be a major change in behavior to make the Touring a success." Robertson also told Inside Line that BMW's own projections show they wouldn't sell more than 1,000 units of a Touring variant there per year, which would make selling the car in the U.S. unviable.

Holz also says BMW still hasn't made a decision on which diesels it will bring to North America. But with the X5 diesel doing well, it remains more likely that the 3-Series will see some diesel variants in the United States than a Touring variant.

Ultimately, the decision will be up to the bean-counters in Munich.

i love the 3 series touring. very spacious and useful. however, you can see BMW wants to sell you an X3 or something else if you need the space.

The ONLY way an X3 would make sense over a 3 series touring is IF it had better fuel mileage - and it doesn't. Other than a raised height, which contradictorily affects handling, there's absolutely no advantage to purchasing an X3 for driving on the roads (even the cargo space difference is negligible). If what BMW is suggesting is true - show the bloody figures and prove it! BUT, be fair and try importing properly comparable vehicles because in North America, the Tourings are de-contented with fewer engine and accessory options to be truly valid compared to the X3/X5. They'd probably see an increase if they provided a 335 touring or a diesel variant. Personally, I believe part of the answer lies in that it's cheaper for car companies to pass safety requirements with an SUV than a wagon and thus improve their profit margins (THAT I dare BMW to respond to). If BMW DOES import the 3GT, then I REALLY don't understand BMW's logic given they've admitted to the sales failure of the 5GT.

I love wagon version of sedans, and I would definitely opt for one of those over a SUV anyday. BUT...go to the States. Every other car is a SUV. Driving around in a sedan becomes tiresome because you can't see in front of you because those SUV's block the view of the road...which is really critical for determining the road situation ahead on highways. This sort of phenomena recipricates into more people buying SUV's...so they can get a better view of the road. Sittin' tall in a SUV is what American's want...I guess it reminds them of their F-150 or something... Also...those Volvo wagons (or the types of people that drove them) didn't do alot of good for European wagon images either...

what a pity. They should bring it over as a diesel wagon. Look at how many VW jetta wagons they sell as diesels here
