New mid-sized coupe model could spawn a four-door sport coupe variant as well as a cabriolet version

These are the very first spy shots of the upcoming coupe version of the new 3-Series F30 rumored to be named 4-Series Coupe.

This is a very early prototype, so it does not reveal much, but we can make out the shape of the upcoming two-door coupe which should be larger than the 3-Series. Or we can imagine it as a smaller version of the 6-Series coupe.

Speculation is that the new 4-Series will feature both two-door and a four-door sport coupe variants (as BMW will be doing with the 6-Series), to compete against the likes of the Audi A5 range, and that BMW may also introduce a cabriolet version too.

How many models are BMW going to make? Kind of looks like a mustang from the Side....

It's a 3 series but a coupe version don't you read?

It appears they will make as many as they have to in order to be all things to all people. The exclusivity of the brand was shot long ago. Quality is history. Driving dynamics are beginning to suffer and not measure up to previous models. Witness the new bavarian Toyota.

What will they call the M version? M4? With M3 being the sedan? Would have thought the 4 door coupe would be the 4 series.

Dilution of the quality because the 4 series will essentially steal sales from the 3 series which in turn will impact future development regardless of whether there's much difference between the 3 and 4. Both BMW and Audi should learn from the Big 3's examples and stop this nonsense and get back to core values. Look hard at the last few year of reports from JD Power and Consumer Reports and their diminished reputation is well earned. My E61 5 series has been back 7 times for warranty work in 3 years! How loyal a customer do you expect me to be if I think the car has nil value after the warranty expires?!

Nil value after warranty expires? You must be joking! My 4 year old E60 with 102,000 kms is still worth 40% of the original price. And I never had a major issue with. All the service has been taken care of, even if I complained about negligible noises which no warranty covers. Now tell me, is that how they service Bimmers in there?

BeEmWe, yes, BMW has been good about doing what it's obligated to repair: the fuel system (pump, injectors - basically everything), various electronics, especially everything in the trunk, a couple of battery cables, a battery. Tourings have a known notorious problem of drains blocking which leads to water collecting in the trunk spare wheel well area (where, guess what! the majority of the electronics are). I've asked to be shown how to clean them out, but cannot because they're not particularly easy to get to - they had to remove the headliner to replace them last time. Now I've got yet another "High Battery Drain" in addition to steering hose replacement and an issue with the mount for the oil filter. I'll say it, BMW has done a good job repairing it, but if you extrapolate my situation, you're looking at $4K in repairs annually. Would YOU buy this car? It's only got just over 65K on the odometer. Do I like this car? For driving it's virtually unparalleled - absolutely the best car to drive; for reliability, this is worse than my '95 Dodge Stratus! I hope that you continue to have a trouble free car. I'd be curious to know which engine and options you've got as well...

Mine is 2008 530i (Sep 2007 production). It's hot climate version (I live in Dubai) with N53B30-O0 engine (272bhp), as you probably know. It came with the 5 year/100,000 kms BMW Service Inclusive Ultimate which took care of all service and repair requirements as well as the extention of manufacturer warranty. At the beginning of the month I extended the contract so my car's still under warranty as well.

One mistake on my part - N54 not N55 engine. When the car goes into the shop again on Monday I will be asking about extending the warranty ( currently 4 years/80K) however, in Canada I believe you have to purchase any extensions by the time delivery occurs. If it weren't for the continuing issues, I'd love to keep the car - I had planned to keep it for 10 years. With the Dinan stage 2 package it really rolls (378HP/415 ft-lbs), but this particular car's reliability is too much of an issue. No, the car in the end won't have a nil value, however, I can see a diminished residual value once a potential buyer sees the service history. I've also seen a long, long list of service recalls - look at www.theautochannel.com for it and you'll see what I'm talking about. My love/hate relationship with this car is has to be tempered by the reality of the costs of maintenance in the future.

I think the reason why they are calling it the 4 series is to use the odd numbers for the 4 door Saloons and the even numbers for the coupes, because I also heard that the new 1 series coupe is rumoured to be called the 2 series. If that is the case though, I wonder what the 6 series 4 door will be called....I personally saw nothing wrong with the 'Coupe' labelling or the Ci variants.

If this doesnt have some adventurous styling van hoydonks comments of having to stay true to whar has gone before hindering adventurous styling for the new 3 series is rubbish. When u create a new moniker like 4 series it gives you the opportunty to do something new.....looks of these pics doesnt look like its going to happen though...shame

Check this out: http://www.autobild.de/artikel/bmw-4er-die-neue-baureihe-1768940.html This is beautifull. That was supposed to be BMW answer to A5 sport back. And this should be how 3 series should look like, at least on front, but...
