Production comes to an end

Mazda has announced the RX-8 Spirit R special edition for the Japanese domestic market (JDM).

The JDM RX-8 Spirit R is based on the RX-8 Type RS (with a six-speed manual transmission) and Type E (with a six-speed automatic gearbox). Distinguishing the model will be features such as the exclusive seat design as well as the bronze alloy wheels.

Special equipment includes the sport suspension and larger brakes (with red calipers), new front headlights and fog lights with black bezel rear combination lights, an exclusive SPIRIT R badge, a piano-black transmission tunnel trim, and leather Recaro sports seats with red stitching.

The final special edition Spirit R RX-8 will be limited to a production run of just 1,000 units as production ends in June 2012. However, Mazda promises the end of the RX-8 doesn't mean the end of rotary engine development. Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda's Representative Director, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, said, "Although RX-8 production is ending, the rotary engine will always represent the spirit of Mazda and Mazda remains committed to its ongoing development."

Mazda RX-8 SPIRIT R Coming to Japan in November 2011

Mazda RX-8 production to end summer 2012; rotary engine development will continue

HIROSHIMA, Japan-Mazda Motor Corporation has announced the Mazda RX-8 SPIRIT R, a special edition version of its four-door, four-seat rotary engine sports car. The RX-8 SPIRIT R will go on sale from November 24, 2011 at all Mazda and Mazda Anfini dealerships throughout Japan. Mazda RX-8 production will end in June 2012 and SPIRIT R will be the final special edition model. Mazda expects to sell 1,000 units.

The RX-8 SPIRIT R is based on the RX-8 Type RS (with six-speed manual transmission) and Type E (with six-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission). It is named after the final limited edition Mazda RX-7, and this pedigree is reflected in stylish features that include exclusive seat design and colored alloy wheels. Additionally, Mazda's curtain and front side SRS airbag system, which is available as a factory-installed option on the base models, will be offered as standard equipment. Following the launch, the Mazda RX-8 lineup will consist of the SPIRIT R and the Type G (with six-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission) model grades only.

Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda's Representative Director, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, said, "Mazda's iconic rotary engine recorded its famous victory in the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance race 20 years ago. Throughout 2011, we have been celebrating the 20th anniversary of that victory by demonstrating the winning 787B racecar at Le Mans' Circuit de La Sarthe and various other events around the world. At each one, the screaming rotary engine and the sight of the 787B have enthralled everyone from young children to race fans who witnessed its victory in 1991. These events have been a powerful reminder of the widespread passion for the rotary engine. Although RX-8 production is ending, the rotary engine will always represent the spirit of Mazda and Mazda remains committed to its ongoing development."

could have at least turbo charged it or gave it some power for the last of the rotaries

I think if they wanted to increase the hp on this car they would have done it to keep up with the big boys. I think they hit a wall with rotary engines because of tuffer emmissions regulations, thats why they have stopped production and R&D. They will pick up where they left off when the economy gets better.

The economy is going to be shite for the next oh maybe next 5 years in Japan anyway. Its a shame but the rotary is going bye bye for the near future.

If you understand the original years of development in the RX-8, Mazda tuned the NA Renesis (13B) to get as much out of this design (1308cc) capacity as they could, remember it has around 40 HP extra for a NA 13B. They cant add a turbo because of regulations or emissions...and reliability. Being an owner of the last RX-8 I have absolutely NO regrets it is a beautifully balance and light sports car and enough power where I live, sublime chassis and handling, great interior and features, superb brakes and tranny..Having owned most rotaries including or many demo RX-7's of ALL series, this is the easiest Rotary to live with by far, no rough running or deceleration control valves giving backfiring and jerking issues like older models with thermal reactors, If Mazda did not redesign the 13B to have side exhaust porting (renesis) the RX-8 would never have happened. The peripheral ported RX-7 13B REW turbo would never pass regulations today like the past 10 years of the RX-8. You have to LIVE with the 8 to REALLY love it, only around 6% of all owners (rx8club.com) regret their purchase..that is pretty good! RIP Mazda RX-8.

I drove an RX8 for half a day, it was quite nice. Smooth, and you just gotta know the thing needs lots of revs.

After all these years and revisions, I would still take a nineteen years old RX-7 over a brand new RX-8.
