McLaren slows MP4-12C production - quality issues to blame
McLaren MP4-12C, 22.07.2011

Properly British?

The McLaren MP4-12C was one of the most highly anticipated supercars in recent memory, but a number of problems have owners fed up and McLaren delaying shipments.

According to Auto Week, the company has been forced to limit production as they attempt to fix several quality issues. Despite a couple of high profile crashes, Tony Joseph - director of McLaren North America - said "there are no safety concerns for the delay" and "we've had some quality-related issues in a few cars we wanted to address before we continue to deliver customer cars."

More specifically, Joseph mentioned they have received complaints about the door-opening mechanisms, condensation in the headlights and a draining battery. However, Jalopnik has reported the issues could be far greater and include problems with the immobilizer, brake lines and navigation system.

Regardless, estimates suggest the shipments could be delayed by two or three weeks so remember patience is a virtue.

That feature is patented by Ferrari so Mclaren can't use it.

yes but as it says the brake lines might not work and you will explode when you hit the gas truck, so cheer up mate!

Aside from rumors of possible brake line failures, all other concerns are non-issues, imo. As for the "high profile" crashes, I'm guessing it had more to do with user error more than anything else.

Brake lines isn't true. The navigation issue is due to the original maker not meeting McLaren's high standards so they outsourced it out to another company in Seattle, and some of the parts were coming from Japan where of course manufacturers were impacted by the earthquake, and the early adopters will be getting the Iris system which in cludes the navigation / infotainment surroundsound Meridian system for free, a $6000+ usd option. Besides give them a little slack, a brand new manufacturing environment, brand new car... there will be some growing pains in the first 6-12 months. At least they are taking care of issues immediately and not blaming the customer for any of the issues. Unlike Ferrari that has been building cars for over 50 years and stil continue to build crap as with with the 458 having tranny problems, bluetooth, of course going up in flames, excessive and uneven brake wear after 450 miles and the list goes on and on!
