2010 Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing

Will target the Porsche 911

In a recent interview, AMG's Christoph Jung confirmed the company is developing a 'baby' SLS.

Speaking with Auto Express, Jung said "There is room for an AMG model below the SLS, targeting the Porsche 911. This is the next market for AMG, and we are considering what is the right package."

Details remain elusive, but Jung confirmed the model will have two-seats and a front-mounted V8 engine. Without giving specifics, Jung commented "we have to have performance figures close to competitors." Regardless, Auto Express speculates car - possibly named the SLC - could have a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with up to 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS). They estimate this would enable the coupe to accelerate from 0-60 mph in four seconds and hit a top speed of 185 mph (298 km/h).

A launch could be three to four years away and pricing is expected to start at €80,000 ($106,344).

Not going to be the twin turbo v8, but rather the NA one inside SLK AMG.

Makes the sl completely pointless. Why not just make a SL roadster (retractable hardtop) and SL gullwing (Fixed roof like sls). Then bring back the SL-R name which sound so much better then the sls name

no amg car can compete with 911. no offense to amg cars, i like them but 911 has his own category..

Sorry, how does the SLS exceed what a 911 is? I see they want to make a smaller one to take on the 911, but this suggests the SLS is somehow superior. The SLS is great, A few people here have it, BUT- it is a very diff. car for a whole other market than the 911. Merc should not be fooled to think people buy this car for it's performance, either.

The SLS is superior to the 911 in terms of power, price and status. You could compare it to a 911 Turbo, but not to the normal one.

There is no implication that the SLS is superior. It's an acknowledgement that the SLS is in a different size, price and weight class that does not allow it to deliver a high performance experience like the 911. I think the real reason for building this car is it will sell like hotcakes and make them an absolute fortune.

The SLS is a direct competitor to the 911 turbo S. The SLC will be a direct competitor to the base 911 Carrera.

Good as the SLS is a 911 turbo gives it a performance headache and I doubt a lesser model will do better. Maybe against the Carrera range otherwise Merc should just shut up; they can't win this war!

Imagine a front-mid engined benz with gulwing doors, and an inline 6 engine with twin turbos kicking out 550hp with awd and a dual clutch system. then just to add more speed a carbon fiber setup. That car would beat a 911 turbo. But i dont think benz has an inline 6 in its arsonal to do it.

First let me say, I dont give a ratstale about Porsche.I do see or need to compare this and that. I dont get the need the for this car. I cant believe a baby SLS would have the gullwing doors, then theres the anyone over 6ft1" cannot sit in the gullwing with seat all the way back and down and still be able to look straight out the windshield. Then on the performance part this car would render the AMG SLK pointless, so I dont get where MB is coming from. I just stick to my SL63 and be happy with my choice.

Merc is now seriously overstocking us with very similar models. If this model comes what happens to the SLK 55 and even the SL range? Sure it's more performance oriented but will it steal sales from a 911 or the SL?

they want to attract younger buyers, SL buyers are usually older. As for the price, it will fit between the SLK 55 and the SL. It will probably steal sales from 911, Audi R8 and Aston Martin Vantage buyers.

But less than a 911 turbo. I'm sure it's going to be a great car just like the SLS and I hope they make it weigh at 1500 kg or less.

The SLC may just be an S-class based coupe with an AMG derrivative. With the base 911 having grown in size, Mercedes probably would like a bite out of that market. Not everyone who buys a 911 takes it to a track. Many are boulevardiers.

No the CL is based on the S class which is a big coupe. It will be smaller than SL but bigger than SLK, probably same size of C coupe. This car needs a lighter engine. A 3.5 litre twin turbo V6 with an output of 500hp is a better choice than a big 5.5L V8. Also it should weighs 1500 kg or less in order to compete with the 911 and the upcoming McLaren.

I wouldn't mind an SLC that is priced above an SLK55 and below an SL63... BUT...will it have gull-wing doors? Owners of the SLS might not like their special gull-wing doors being on a "less expensive" car. Their car won't be so special anymore.

i would like to have a mercedes with the size of a SLK or maybe slightly bigger but as Coupe not as Cabrio. Also a longer Hood and therefore a smaller trunk. Light engine like 3 or 3.5 litre V6 with around 350HP but LIGHT! Such a small light car would blow minds.. then add a nice Interior and sell it for 65.000. I would love this. It would be definitly enough to have a lot of fun on streets.. and cmon? who takes his car on the track lets say.. more than once in 2 year? We dont want another Supercar we need a car for the puplic road which makes fun and is affortable. Would love this.
