BMW extends lead in U.S. premium brand sales
2011 BMW X3 with M Sports Package - 12.16.2010

BMW leading Mercedes-Benz by a margin of around 7,000 units for the year

BMW has extended its lead in U.S. premium brand sales over its arch-rival Mercedes-Benz.

For September sales were up 19 percent for the Bavarian brand while increasing only 9 percent for the Stuttgart-based automaker Mercedes. Sales for the year through to the end of September were 177,679 units for BMW while for the Mercedes-Benz brand total sales were 169,862.

Lexus, the traditional leader in U.S. premium sales, saw its number of units sold fall 13 percent to 135,647 vehicles on a difficult year where production has been hit hard by the tsunami disaster in Japan.

BMW sales were buoyed by the popularity of the X3 SUV model, which has almost quadrupled sales since its facelift last January. BMW has sold 19,167 units of the X3 in the United States so far this year.

The article mentions BMW, MB & Lexus. Does that make Audi 4th in the US or is another luxury brand 4th?

@Beemer89 - By your logic I then assume that Porsche does not fit the luxury category either?

Great! Higher production at lower quality levels - not their quality isn't tarnished already!

This should really come as no surprise with BMW's launch of the new X3 & 5-series, plus the 1-series and X1. Although I think it is more indicative of who is winning the race to capture the bottom end of the market where essentially there is no luxury. And a continuation to do so really begs the question as to how much of a luxury brand BMW really is. Where luxury really begins and exists BMW is a distant third to it's German rivals.

I want to point out that this article may have been published before Mercedes Benz USA posted their September sales. In fact, 2011 YTD U.S. sales are higher for Mercedes (182,314) vs BMW (177,679). Though to be fair to BMW, of the total YTD 2011 MB units roughly 12,500 were Sprinter Vans; nevertheless, MB is on track to take the #1 spot for 2011.
