Hyundai developing a 10-speed transmission
Hyundai recently introduced an eight-speed automatic transmission in the 2012 Genesis and Equus models
Hyundai Motor Group, which inlcudes the Hyundai and Kia brands, is developing an automatic ten-speed transmission, according to a report by Automotive News.
The new ten-speed transmission will go into premium models such as the Hyundai Genesis and Equus and is slated to be introduced by 2014.
Hyundai recently introduced an eight-speed automatic in the 2012 Genesis and Equus models.
Automakers are increasingly looking at extended gearing in order to improve the fuel economy of their ranges. Porsche recently introduced a seven-speed manual in the new 911 whereby the seventh gear is meant for low-engine speed cruising while top speed is actually reached in sixth gear.

I did not know that the 7th gear in Porsche's 991 was not meant to reach top speed. Pretty clever gearbox and the 7th gear makes even more sense.

Cars would be a lot more efficient if they weighed less. It seems they are getting stuffed with more and more equiptment that we rarely use but suck electricity!

The Ssang Yong is based on an ancient Mercedes E Class.
The Hyundai is...well...a Hyundai.
Also Mister Stig...the Genesis had those lights before the C-Class face-lift

You seem to have mistaken it for the now-replaced Ssangyong Chairman, which was based on the W124 E-Class. This is a Hyundai.

That's outdated - mine had 27 several years ago. Now they're making 30-speed bikes. :P

And watch Mercedes wipe everyone clean with a 20 speeder. All jokes aside though, I think even the 8 speed gearbox that BMW (and a few others) offer is too much. Oh well. All in the name of efficiency I guess. All I'm praying is that manufacturers do not kill off the manual transmission

The establishment better take heed, thats one good looking car.......BMW's go well, but look crap, Audis look better but nothing ground breaking differentiates it from the others, Mercedes is woefully dull and this could be just the ticket..........if only we weren't all badge snobs ;)

Hyundai is simply doing this for bragging rights. I wouldn't be surprised if their new 8 speed transmission has durability problems. This ofcourse is just to copy and try to one-up Lexus, taking their technology and using it without really understanding it. Even the 8-speed is overkill. Hyundai just wants to look best on paper. I wouldn't even consider this brand and their "new" technologies until they've been in the market for a while. Just because its new doesn't mean its better.

10 gears.....really???? Considering our speed limit is 60, each gear is good for 6 miles an hour...is this really necessary???

I bet if u just touch the gas pedal to get more power on the highway it will drop like 4 gears if its on the 10th gear just for a little power. This thing will constantly be changing gear that i wonder if its smart to sacrifice durability for a fraction of efficiency. The more it switches gears the more likly it will break down, and service on it will take any money you saved on gas.

For all I care, they can put in there 100 gears, one for each km of speed.

then you would probalby like the new CVT transmissions in the new nissans. In finite gear ratios means u have an infinite amount of gears
