Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano vs. the Ferrari F40 [video]
Video is meant to highlight the F1-derived technologies that make the 599 GTB Fiorano so fierce on the open road
Some more superfluous pleasure here in the form of this video put out by Ferrari which we suspect comes from old footage...but so what.
The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano goes up against its older sibling the F40 in what looks like the desert region of the American Southwest. We even get an Ennio Morricone-like Spaghetti Western musical score to boot.
The video is meant to highlight the F1-derived technologies that have gone into the 599 GTB which make it so ferocious a performer on the open road.

There's a certian '90s-ness to this. Reminds me of like NFS 2's trailer

some of the camera work is poor. perhaps the cars were going 30-50mph and with a REALLY SHAKY camera to look like it is going fast.
ok ferrari, who's next? F50 vs FF? and Enzo vs 458~?

How unfair is this competition (hope I don't have to explain why)? Shame on Ferrari for doing this! The F-40 holds a special place in any Ferrari enthusiast heart. As a kid during the late 80's, this was The Car we all fantasized/dreamed about. First Ferrari I ever owned, too. Okay, it was scale model kit car I got for Christmas but who gives a damn?! It was a Ferrari and I owned it!

it would have been more fun to see Clint Eastwood going head to head with either Lee VanCleef/Franco Nero but , those guys are past their primes so...

Ferrari marketing is stupid! Due to the difference in weight 1100ish kg vs 1700 kg the F40 would EAT the 599 around any racetrack. Are they high or something? They really should stop killing their legendary cars.

its not killing their legondary cars, and yes the modern Ferrari's r better than the older F line(f-40, f-50, and f-60 aka enzo). About a yr or 2 after the enzo stopped production it was already beaten by another Ferrari on Ferrari's own test track. This is to demonstrate the new tech aid they have put in to maximize efficiency of the engine. Like for instance, special traction control, the use of a dual clutch transmission, and computer systems that frequntly monitor what you are doing to allow u to look like a hero on the track. The f-40 didnt have those aids but we still and always will love it. Its a perfect chance to get back to basics. If u can control that thing on the track then u can do whatever the hell u want with these new cars. Its not about saying our old stuff is crap, its about saying our new stuff is better than the best we were able to make way back in the 80's. Imagine what the f-70 will be like if this Ferrari is able to beat the f-40.

My nissan altima can beat a nissan Z made in the 80's, does that mean the z should be looked down upon? no it just means nissan is moving forward. my altima couldnt beat a z from the same year. its just interesting. top gear has done something similar on his show, showing that the old professional racing cars are beaten today by the modern street legal cars of today.

I can argue that an 80's z lets say the 280zx with a boost controller would not lose to any Altima. Anyway I understand what your trying to say but why does technology have to replace the driver? Are we not good enough anymore to be expected to be able to drive those cars without all the electro-crap they put in nowadays? If you want my opinion there are some innovations I can do without. I believe in the human component when it comes to driving cars. The minute they are driven for you your not driving, the computer is. Hell you might as well be taking the bus.

my altima is a 3.5 stick. i can take v8 mustangs (the ones with 260 hp). a 4 cyl altima maybe not but my v6 is the same engine in the z just not sport tuned. if it werent for those driver aids many more ppl wouldnt be able to maximize what they can get out of their cars and if they tried there would be more accidents. driver aid allows people to have more fun. when u have a dual clutch transmission instead of a conventional transmission then u get similar numbers as if u added 100 hp or more. i myself drive a stick with no traction control or abs. but in a race as u just saw in the video, technology wins. even on ur best try you cant beat the perfection of launch control and the advanced traction control. plus ur talkin better gas when your not racing, which increases the company's gas milage average complying with gov new rules and manages to be faster at the same time.

The 280ZX Turbo manual had a 0-60 MPH of 7.4 second while the automatic managed to turn out 7.1 seconds. my car stock 0-60 is 5.9 in the model with leather and navigation. my car is the base model and weighs 3000 pounds (i put it on a scale) for a 4 door. so with minor mods i can probably do 5 sec 0-60.

How about this. If ever your in Montreal I'll challenge you light to light with my Lancer Evo 1 RS. We'll see If my old tech holds up to your "super" altima.

that actually might be a really close race if u havent modded ur car, the only thing i added to my car is an intake. ur car has 244hp mine has 250, urs weighs 200-300 pounds less than mine, urs has turbo lag but reving it b4 u set off and awd will probably cure that. my car has a better fuel delivery system tho and only 60k miles on it

It is funny how soo many claim to be "the driver", but you still have to admit that without these modern techs we may not live to be "the driver" the following day. Too many people think they are F1 drivers and over estimate their real abilities

Launch control and e-diffs can make a hero out of anyone. But when its too easy people become worse drivers, that is my point. And yes some people should expect to not return alive if they plan on becoming great drivers. Its a coin flip when your going all out, especially on the streets.
September 30, 2011 7:35 pm
see I dont like that, you can still be a good driver if you have driver aid, you cant be totally incompetent to drive fast or on a track. if making computers in cars helps save lives of people who want to have fun then so be it. If I were givin the option of having a huge NET below me as i paraschuted out of a plane. I WOULD TAKE IT! im still going to get the RUSH of the free fall and the fun of doing it. If i get critisized by an experienced parachuter for being too scared to land on my own and totally putting my faith in a cloth attached by strings to save me from splattering all over the ground, then excuse my language but that parachuter can go screw himself lmao. I would even be ok with a gps being attached to my harness and the parachute having a computer to guide me to the net if Im strugging to aim for the correct spot.
