Porsche 991 generation to last 14 years
Porsche 991 GT3 rendered speculation, 1024, 26.09.2011 / carraradesign.deviantart.com

Officially revealed to the public just a few weeks ago, the Porsche 911 in its sixth generation, known internally as 991, is not only set to spawn all of the usual derivatives, but will be staying with us for an extended period of time.

According to CAR, the next variant to arrive in 2011 includes the 911 Cabriolet. A year later in the end of 2012, the all-wheel drive variants, the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, will arrive in coupe and cabrio guises. Debuting in 2013, the notorious 911 Turbo boasting 520bhp (527 PS / 387 kW) will be followed by the Cabrio Turbo in 2014. But not to get ahead of ourselves, 2013 has another important arrival in the form of the 911 GT3. Towards the end of 2014, the 911 Targa goes back to its roots with a new removable roof panel. No more sliding glass roof.

Although Porsche is still undecided, the raked-screen Speedster could emerge around this time. However, the big unsurprise is the realization of a 911 Hybrid. Also with no planned time frame, the 991 has been engineered with consideration to a conventional plug-in hybrid system. Although encouraged by the success of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car, a road-going version becoming reality remains to be seen.

But not to worry as there will be many more variants (e.g. GT2, RS) and special editions to emerge. Especially, since the 991 is expected to hang around for two seven-year lifecycles. That's 14 years of 991 product still to come.

I don't think so ... I think they will produce it until 2020 including a "facelift" in about 6 years. But who knows ;-)

I both like and hate the fact the 911 has so many variants, I'd like it if they kept it simple but when you do pick a version of the 911 and then equip it the way you want it , it feels like they've built one customized just for you. But I don't think they need a hybrid version, the 911 is already one of thee most fuel efficient true sports cars you can buy, I think they could do an electric variant and keep the rest of the lineup as is. My Porsche 911 is the cheapest car to fuel up out of all the cars I've had.

the hybrid drive train will be there for more power, the extra economy is just a bonus.

well considering the 996 started in around 1997, and the 997 is esentially a heavily facelifted 996, it's lifespan was also 14 years.

too long to wait for the targa. Are they going to continue to produce the current turbo until the new one arrives?

WCF, could you please credit the rendering to www.carraradesign.deviantart.com please? And the article actually says it will retain its proportions for 14 years, which means the 991 will be replaced by a car based on the same platform in 7 years.

It wouldn't matter even if 991's going to be with us for the next 40 years never mind 14 because the body frame hasn't been changed much since 1959. What's crucial is underneath the skin - the unseen mechanical bits. Lol!

Well, the basic architecture has not been altered much since the 1964 original - so not a surprise. Perhaps a facelift would do the trick, similar to the 930 and 964 variants. The 911 design fundamentals were built to last for generations to come.
