Could have 210 PS (154 kW / 207 hp)

Volkswagen has been noncommittal about the Polo R, but our spies have snapped the first pictures of the upcoming hot hatch.

Wearing a GTI body, the prototype was caught in Spain and apparently features a 1.6-liter TSI engine from the Polo R WRC. Before you get too excited, rumors suggest the four-cylinder will be detuned to produce 210 PS (154 kW / 207 hp) instead of 300 PS (221 kW / 296 hp). If this is correct, we can expect it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in approximately six seconds.

The Polo R will likely be launched late next year, so stay tuned for additional information.

Why waste time and money to invest in developing a 1.6 TSi to only 210 PS when there is already the acclaimed 1.4 TSi which easily reaches that value. To justify the price should be a sportiest car with something around 225PS, starting with the 1.4 TSi , low weight (as a BMW CSL) and suspensions, brakes and other components to be upgraded to be a street legal race car. .. A real pocket-rocket, more track day car and less daily drive... VW be really radical for once.

i don't think they'll make this small beast any more powerful, because then it might be faster than the golf/scirocco r :)

If you were a VW fanboy you would clearly know that you could just reflash the ecu to get more power (think of all those ppl that justify buying a tiguan to try and make it go fast), my preference would always be with the gti's twin charged engine but hey I would never buy a VW because of the way they drive, the fact the Golf R went to a turbo 4 banger was a travesty

@tuds - i'm partly in agreement. the .:R shouldn't have been a 4-pot, but they'd have never shifted a V6 in the current climate with fuel ecomony and emissions on the agenda. i also wouldn't bother developing a 1.6 that generates the same power as the new 2.0 TFSI with 210PS. i doubt it'll be any cleaner so what's the point?

I agree with you tuds. VW is trying to save the environment by using four rather than a bi-turbo V6 on the Golf R!

They can't put a more powerfull engine on the Polo R because they wount sell the scirocco and the GTI any more. Maybe they will put in a 4 motion to so that would make the car more interesting with a 1,6 tsi engine. How knows......
