2012 Porsche 911's 7-speed manual gearbox explained [video]
Video explains the workings of the new 7-speed manual gearbox
This brief video explains the gearboxes offered on the 2012 Porsche 911.
For the 7-speed manual Porsche offers a very sporty gears 1 through 6 while the 7th gear comes with a long ratio for improved fuel-economy. Performance is not sacrificed at all as the gear ratios up to the 6th are fairly short and top speed is, indeed, reached in 6th gear and not the top gear.
The video also touts the PDK 7-speed box which is geared much the same way, with the the first 6 gears made to deliver performance while the long 7th helps out with fuel-economy.
On the 2012 911, the gear lever is also closer to the driver, as the center console is elevated compared to the previous model, making for easier manual shifts.

Porsche makes the best manual gearbox period. For the purists who can drive manual, Porsche's clutch feel and short throw shifts are very rewarding. I highly recommend everyone experience it.

the S2000 is also very good, I prefer the clutch feel of Porsches. It's a little tighter. As for the Z06, I owned a 2009 Z06, biggest waste of money of my life!! Traded in for a C2S, never looked back.

Give me the pdk please - changes gear quicker than the human hand and I live in a capital city and don't wish to be using both feet whilst heading home through traffic while listening to Celine Dion.....I mean 50 Cent! Damn it!

Manual box anytime. Would be nice to have a Carrera GT with the sweet V10 at the rear. And Jamiroquai's Cosmic Girl on the Bose.

... just a technical point - surely the top speed CAN'T be reached in 6th gear if there's a higher gear ratio unless the speed is limited in 7th gear?

the 7th gear has a long ratio, that?s why it is able to reduce rpms at higher speeds, it?s a 6+1 speed if u want. the 7th is separate from the others.

the engine will probably run out of gogo juice since the RPM drop is soo big between 6 and 7.

that?s why i love Porsche.
The PDK is doing so well, Porsche could have stayed with a 6 speed along with the PDK and discontinue the manual at some pont in favor of the PDK, like everyone else.
But no, Porsche is investing fresh money in the manual.
This is is a gift for the real fans and driving enthusiasts.

Actually, the PDK is technically an "automated manual". A manual transmission that can shift itself. The new seven speed is PDK based, without the automation...or the clutch-in-clutch. Very smart move on Porsche's part. Please the drivers, please the engineering team, please the accountants and please the fan-boys...

the fresh money into the manual box is more likely for Emissions and fuel consumption regulations, etc reasons.

What a waste, we all know this is the best car in it's class! Be braver Porsche- make an excessively flamboyant, uncomfortable for daily driving, over-priced car capapble of unwarranted spontaneous combustion car, so you can REALLY compete with the Italian brands. Right now all you have on offer is that GT2RS thing which, sure, smokes the 458s and Gallardos, but it don set itself on fire... Please do this, so all those who keep complaining about choosing evolution over revolution can also have some fun. the argument of it's too perfect, thus boring is getting old...

The best clutch I ever tried was on the Ferrari F355. Jumps to the biting point every time & startedrolling before I gave it any gas. Wonderful. Having said that, I would probably buy PDK on any new Porsche.
