BMW M5 tackles Laguna Seca [video]

Features a twin-turbo V8

BMW has released a new video which shows the 2012 M5 at the Laguna Seca racetrack.

While the driver is taking it easy, the clip provides the usual glamour shots as well as the sound of a roaring engine.

As we have previously reported, the M5 is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine with 560 PS (412 kW / 552 hp) and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission which enables the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) - or 305 km/h (190 mph) with M Driver's Package.

BMW confuses me with their performance stats. I remember the last 505hp M5 with the V-10. I saw a video of that car driving on the Autobahn hitting 200mph ungoverned (European version I think), and it hit 60 in like 4.2 seconds. How is it that this new M5 has a lighter V8 with twin turbos, more hp, waaaaay more torque and it does 60 in 4.4, and can "only" top out at 190mph? When the 335i first came out, it was tested and hit 60 in 4.1 seconds. Can we get official performance numbers from these performance carmakers? Its hard to justify a price increase alongside an engine size, weight, and performance decrease.

@Slim - Just a few points to note, a 335i does not and never will do 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds....unless you drive it off a cliff then maybe! The E60 M5 never hit 60 in 4.2 either...look it up, your facts are wrong.

I cant believe you wrote all that out without checking (which would have taken about 30 second tops) and getting some quite basic figures wrong.

I must say though, that the V8 in that car sounds really good. I think it fits better with the car than a V10.

old M5 CSL was the true successor! 5.5L V10 550hp....all performance were better than this BMW RS6/E63 AMg (yes M became heavy, turbocharged and automatic gearbox....that's not M it is AMG/RS disguised in BMW dress)!!!!!!!!!!!!

all hail to the originals (E28 and E34 M5's....and E39 was already a backward step because it became mass produced and it is not handmade...but it was great looking and had V8 rumbling and got stick-shift....than E60 had sequential gearbox and great responsive hi-rev engine (NA of course like all real M's) and only design was weird....but this new F10 is a dissapointement)!!!!!!

Digg'in the sound of the V8 over V10! However bring RS6 to seek and destroy.

youre not gonna see an rs6 for another 4 years where they strip down and analyze an m5 completely and then decide to bring it out with a ttw12 most probably this time and then have a disastrous production time of one year and gets forgotten like it never came

Same old story Merc vs Audi vs BMW. In the story of best overall performing car last remembered (M3,C63 & RS4)...didn't BMW come out on top....again it may look the BMW will take out the top spot again (M5, E63 & RS6???)....bring it on

Well, I hope that when I do get to drive this car, it will be easier to drive than the last M5 which was a REAL B*TCH to drive with the seq. gear box

LOL. I like the front (almost), but the back is just horrific, it looks sooooooooo wrong. It has to be said, great performance but such a dull dull design.

Sounds dirty. Was worried that the two turbos would bastardize the noise. $90,000 plus options? Bargain of the century if you ask me.
