Audi R8 facelift leaked?
Could feature futuristic LED headlights
Audi has apparently released a new photo that previews the front end design of the 2013 R8.
As you can see, the mock up has larger air intakes, futuristic LED headlights and a revised grille which echoes the 2012 A5 and A6.
According to previous reports, the facelifted model will be launched next year with a 450 PS (331 kW / 444 hp) 4.2-liter V8 and a 540 PS (397 kW / 533 hp) 5.2-liter V10. Additionally, a seven-speed S-tronic transmission could replace the current R-tronic gearbox.

I'm really liking those LED lights. Can't wait to see the other three quaters of the car.

Not entirely convinced, i like the idea but needs a little polishing i think the indicator being on the top and bottom is excessive one or the other not both

Stunning - innovative and leading as usual. Exciting! "Never follow"

LOL, I get it, good joke, b/c thats the oposite of what they really do. Always follow.

Interesting but doesn't have horizontal slats on the air intakes so I'm a bit skeptical. Looks like a design proposal coz it's chopped at the front fender too.

As though the headlamps aren't menacing enough, Audi stares into the future with meaner eyes! Who's Bad?

Actually this aint even Audi's work... I don't understand German but seems like a tech study from Dresden Tech University!

Well actually, it is. He was a diploma student at Dresden. And got hired as a ledlight designer by Audi after his master project. So the picture you see here is very likely to be his work at Audi.

it's Christoph H?u?inger's thesis on the future of car lighting at the Technical University of Dresden. after his graduation he was immediately hired by Audi for their lighting design department.

WOAH.. lay off the headlights Audi, it doesn't match the rest of the car at all...

cs5555, the R8 IS laughable in its class, no one with sense can dispute that; it needs an update badly. The A8 is quite striking in person...as is the A4. A series of "technically clean" lines that designers (ANY graphic artist) respect the world over. Some call that boring...everyone's entitled to their opinions. Some call "technically clean" paintings and classical music boring also...usually the uneducated. I'd have to disagree with the reactive comment though. Audi stays consistently slightly ahead of the pack when it comes to in-vehicle-technology, panel-forming/joining technology and interior packaging. Poor build quality? LOL, you must've never been inside one before!

not all technically clean designs are respectful.. audi did this in a tasteless, boring and lazy way... 911 is probably the most respectful and classical example if u get what i mean.. i guess only the educated ones can tell which clean designs are good and which are bad..
also, how could audi be ahead of the game when they only launch model by following others? CLS - A5, A7; ML, X5, Cayenne - Q7; SLR - R8; X3 - Q5.. well u get the picture..

@golddaytona You can call the R8 design many things, but boring is not one of them. Visually, the R8 has a lot going on compared to the 911. The A5 was not developed to compete against the CLS. IMO the A7 and CLS are not true competitors but they are often regarded as such. The R8 was not developed to take on the SLR. Lastly, you opt to place emphasis on who develops first. Others opt to place emphasis on who develops best.

golddaytona, "technically clean" designs are by-the-book, exactly as defined and rely on the combination of each element to create "drama" in the whole; that is why designers respect them, if not necessarily liking them. As such, they can be neither "tasteless" or "lazy" since personal emotion is purposely withheld. The 911 is probably the antithesis of these things, however, I do get your point. The 911 shape (and detailing!) is timeless and pulls emotion from its onlookers in a polarizing way. In theory, these generation Audi's will age the same way.

About time. The R8 has been begging for an update. Hopefully it extends past the face to the rest of the car.

I still don't get how LEDs can replace headlights, realights ok cause they only have to be visible. But headlights have to shine into the distance, as far as I know LEDs can't do that.
August 25, 2011 10:14 am
To put it simply, they just use really big ones (or a combination of really big ones) to "shine into the distance". Compared to Halogen or HID lighting technology they consume CONSIDERABLY less energy, are housed in much shallower assemblies and are designed to last the life of the car. Unfortunately, these first generation LED headlights generate a lot of heat and usually require some type of cooling mechanism that negates many of the benefits listed above. Baby steps...

@cs5555 Now I'm 100% convinced! Or base your next rant on fact, lol.
