Nissan stabs fellow Japanese brands in the back with new ad [video]

Japanese automaker says its inventory is 'back' while those of its competitors are still lagging in the aftermath of the quake/tsunami disaster

Ouch!

Guess there isn't much solidarity amongst Japanese automakers in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami disaster that struck the country last March and crippled its automotive production - at least not on Nissan's part.

Nissan is now running an ad in the United States boasting of its healthy inventory while claiming that its competitors' supplies of vehicles are still lagging behind.

Of course, they don't mention any other brands by name in the ad but one shot does show a frustrated-looking sales man at what is easily identifiable as a Honda dealership.

And the boasting continues from Nissan USA's vice-president for sales and marketing, Al Castignetti.

"I'm sitting here with 160,000 vehicles in dealer inventory -- a 54-day supply," Castignetti told Automotive News. "Last year at this time, I had a 46-day supply.

"Honda and Toyota are talking about coming back. We don't have to wait till October or November. We're back now."

Castignetti did say he was frustrated with the perception in the market place that all Japanese brands are low on supply of vehicles.

But we still consider this a below-the-belt shot by Nissan at its fellow Japanese competitors.

Not very honorable.

Nissan is a corporation just like every other company. They have an edge on something and they want people to know it. Nissan also sells better preforming cars for a cheaper price than the competition. They sell less cars because people rather have more comfortable boring cars than exciting cars.

Well then, according to your admission, Nissan is just plain less popular than their competitors regardless of reason.... whether people want boring cars or not.... I suppose their competitors can say they're so popular that they can't meet the demands of the people beating down their doors due to the tsunami!

Or the fact that they have a 54 day supply because they are not selling well!

The other side of the coin which I'm sure is really the case.

Nissan is way behind its competitors in popularity! Of course they will have a huge inventory. Its like a store having a huge leftover inventory because its competitors are selling out theirs. Lame ad.

I DON'T THINK SO...your headline... MAZDA was one of a few (if only) car maker that was not damaged by the terrible EQ and Tsunami...being in Hiroshima (south west) they were safe....the issue was POWER (electricity)..their production was back to normal in July.

I don't know what they are so smug about, because all of Nissan's cars are ugly. The Cube, the Juke, the Murano, the new Micra...all horrible. The only car Nissan should make is the GTR.

You fail to realize that all those ugly cars sell in large numbers allowing Nissan to fund the development of the GTR. There is a reason that when a fanboy actually does start his own car company, they ALL inevitably fail.

Either way it is very immoral to use a disaster in which thousands of people died as a means to advertise anything in order to generate profits, direct or indirectly.

I found this tactic very discouraging from Nissan; especially from Japanese firm. Foreign brands may have benefited from the shortage caused by the disaster, but I don't think they have flaunted it like Nissan.

 M! M!
Nissan, I buy a car because I like the car, not because you have a surplus supply of it. Very poor marketing campaign.

Wrong, its great marketing. People are stupid and think that there are no Japanese cars available and Detroit is lying to people that only American cars can be purchased. Nissan made a smart move.

how about you redesign some of your models Nissan like the sentra: unchanged since 2007, Frontier: unchanged since 2005, titan: same as frontier. Also stop making ugly cars like the juke, cube, and leaf.
