Lighter and more fuel efficient

New details are starting to emerge about the 2014 Audi A4 (B9).

According to AutoBild, the car will ride on the MLB Evo platform which will enable it to weigh 120 to 150 kg (265 to 331 lbs) less than the current model. Despite the reduced mass, the A4 is expected to grow in size to battle the enlarged BMW 3-Series.

Engine options are still a closely guarded secret, but the TDIs are expected to produce 150 to 300 PS (110 kW / 148 hp to 221 kW / 296 hp). Likewise, the petrols should develop 150 to 350 PS (110 kW / 148 hp to 257 kW / 345 hp). To improve efficiency, the models will reportedly be outfitted with an engine stop/start system, brake energy regeneration and a thermal energy recovery system.

If that doesn't sound eco-friendly enough, the A4 plug-in hybrid is rumored to have a rear-axle electric motor that will enable the car to travel 30 to 60 km (19 to 37 miles) on electricity alone. Additionally, this setup will offer an all-wheel drive system dubbed e-Quattro that will have no mechanical connection between the axles.

Last but not least, there's word of a CNG variant that will be launched as part of Audi's e-gas project.

I like how BMW is keeping the 3 series compact, compared to the competition. The current A4 is already larger then the 3 and its going to grow agian...soon it will be the size of the A6.

Not larger than the A4 though, which is already larger than the current 3 series, and the A4 is going to grow with the next gen.

Interesting. Notably that the B8 has a 5 year shelf life as it should be refreshed next year. I for one would be surprised if the B9 is larger, making it very similar to the A6. What's more, how is Audi following BMW when the current B8 is substantially larger than the outgoing 3 series? I think it's the other way around.

Hate the A4 getting any bigger though it leaves room for the A3 sedan but A6 is looking good too and I don't want to choose between two cars that are the same size but have different designs.

As always Audi is late to the party. 3 series will be selling for 2 years and then will have a facelift when new A4 comes out. Same with current A6 and A8 they come in the middle of BMW and MERC model changes.

I see this as more of an advantage and clever sales tool because Audi is bringing their cars out after the other ones have already been on the market and people start to lose their appeal for the older, and want the newer instead. Plus, this gives Audi a chance to bring out technology or design trends that are newer than the brands who have already redesigned or introduced their models.
